Reviews for Primary Care - Fall 2007 - (Page 11) Fresh Perspectives in Chronic Constipation and Other Functional Bowel Disorders Introduction Chronic constipation is a multisymptom disorder that leads to an estimated 2.5 million office visits per year, and between 30,000 and 90,000 annual hospitalizations. Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome-constipation predominant share similar symptoms, which can lead to difficulties in both the diagnosis and management of these disorders. Researchers and clinicians have tried to address this with recent modifications of the diagnostic criteria (Rome criteria), published guidelines such as the American College of Gastroenterology task force recommendations, and clinical trials involving multiple emerging therapeutic options. These efforts have renewed interest in these disorders and have provided additional knowledge and evidence-based clinical experience, which hopefully will eventually translate into improved patient care. Because of this, it remains vital that healthcare providers managing these patients stay up-to-date with the latest cutting-edge data. This monograph will provide participants with fresh perspectives on the latest information regarding these common gastrointestinal disorders. It will address the most pressing questions surrounding the etiology, diagnosis, and effective strategies for the management of these functional bowel LEARNING OBJECTIVES disorders.
