For state and national recognition as industry-wide leaders in healthcare IT, organizations should consider applying for a HIMSS Davies Award. Applications for the 2008 Davies Awards can be downloaded at www.himss.org/davies beginning the week of Jan. 7. In addition, the Web site features the new Davies Writing to Win presentation. Since 1995, the Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence has recognized excellence in the implementation and use of HIT, specifically electronic health records, for healthcare organizations, private practices and public health systems; this year marks the launch of an award recognizing community health organizations. The Davies Award application process serves as a self-assessment, invaluable for planning an EHR implementation, based on four key areas: management, functionality, technology and overall value. Originally created by CPRI-HOST in 1995, the Davies Award program honors Dr. Nicholas Davies, an Atlanta-based physician who was committed to improving patient care through the use of HIT. Staff at healthcare systems applying for Davies Awards must assess and document their progress and accomplishments against a framework for thinking related to the process of EHR implementation. While the process for applying for each Davies Award varies slightly, each award includes an application phase and a site visit phase prior to final selection. Guidelines defining the content and format of the final application for the awards listed below are available at www. himss.org/davies.
