In this case, Longe’s team reviewed products from 75 companies before selecting 3n for its imprimatur. 3n’s four key markets are healthcare, higher education (Virginia Tech went to 3n after last year’s campus shootings), corporations and federal, state and local governments. Among government customers Steve Kirchmeier are the Department of Homeland Security, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Coast Guard. Most of 3n’s customers already have a notification plan in place, says Steve Kirchmeier, senior director, healthcare sales, at 3n. “The thing we bring to the table is the timely execution of these plans,” he said. The 3n subscription pricing model is based on the number of users, Kirchmeier said. For 200 employees, he estimates the cost would be less than $10,000 per year. AHA, through AHA Solutions, has served as a resource to hospitals for more than 25 years, analyzing and endorsing select products and services. AHA identified emergency notification as a pressing challenge in healthcare based on feedback from hospitals that underlined the need for timely and effective communication to employees in emergencies, in meeting Joint Commission communication requirements, and in conducting rapid staff callbacks. “AHA Solutions selected 3n as the American Hospital Association’s endorsed partner because it meets the needs of our members in all aspects of performance,” said Anthony J. Burke, president and CEO of AHA Solutions. “We also found that the advantages of implementing a system designed specifically for emergency notification surpassed the benefits of expanding existing business or clinical notification applications not designed to handle the strain on people, processes and technology that an emergency creates.” “3n has watched many hospitals struggle over the past several years with attempting to adapt existing notification systems designed for switchboard operations, patient appointments or physician reminders to function as emergency notification modules with limited success,” said Cinta Putra, CEO of 3n. “We applaud the AHA on its recognition that an emergency notification system within a hospital environment has very distinct requirements that cannot be met by other types of notification systems.” ■ MoRe At HealthcareiTnews.com e connect: AHA 0208 Omaha hospital boosts data management By ricHard pizzi, Associate Editor - Children’s Hospital of Omaha, a 142-bed facility and the only full-service pediatric healthcare center in Nebraska, has implemented software to manage the hospital’s automated job scheduling tasks. ActiveBatch – from Advanced Systems Concepts, Inc. – will be the key application responsible for Children’s Hospital’s data warehouse OMAHA, NE management, hospital executives said. The software will play a critical role in updating and maintaining virtually every major data repository at the hospital. Parsippany, N.J.-based ASCI produces system software for Windows, UNIX, Linux and OpenVMS systems. “Until now, most of our processing tasks have been accomplished through a combination of manual operations and internally-generated scripts,” said Allana Cummings, vice president and chief information officer of Children’s Hospital. “We realized that automation would significantly increase the availability and value of our various data stores.” Cummings said a key consideration for her team in adopting ASCI’s ActiveBatch was the software’s ability to interface with many different operating plat- forms, databases and applications. “Our department is responsible for the integrity of a wide range of information that reaches every part of the hospital,” Cummings said. “Examples include patient care and safety, operations, financials and accounting, infection control, computerized provider order entry, and laboratory data.” ■ MoRe At HealthcareiTnews.com e connect: oMAHA 0208 l MANAGING THE FLOW OF CRITICAL MESSAGES Faster.
