The Gantry Group recently completed its annual study, “Provider Clinical Technology Expenditures 2007,” to ascertain hospital execuCONCORD, MA tives’ investment plans over the next 12 months. The report notes that providers are making significant investments in clinical technology, with nearly half allocating 40 percent or more of their current technology budget to such solutions. The study concludes that, by the end of 2008, more than 80 percent of provider facilities will have invested in the following technologies: Digital medical imaging; Medication management/eprescribing; ■ RFID patient identification/ drug distribution; ■ EMR/EHR; ■ Computerized physician order entry; ■ Mobile applications (e.g. charge capture, rounding, prescriptions); ■ Patient documentation; and ■ ■ ■ Patient care planning solutions. The report claims that for all clinical applications, providers will increasingly and rapidly adopt onpremise vendor solutions over the next 12 months. Gantry analysts say that, in general, providers will move away from custom in-house solutions and hosted (ASP) vendor solutions and drastically decrease their commitments to outsourcers. Integrated Document Workflow Executives from 43 hospitals, comprised of CEOs (8 percent), CFOs (8 percent), CIO/CTOs (12 percent), VP Nursing (9 percent) and VP/Director Case Management (18 percent), participated in the study. Healthcare facilities of all sizes, ranging from 150 beds to more than 1,000 beds, were represented in the study. Study responses were predominately drawn from hospital systems (49 percent) and independent hospitals (34 percent). The Gantry Group is a strategic marketing firm specializing in guiding healthcare software vendors to build offerings around payers’ and providers’ needs and challenges. ■ MoRe At HealthcareiTnews.com e connect: GANtRy 0208 I N TEGR ATED l liJ Streamline Health document management solutions integrate across the enterprise Continued from page 30 to ensure access to all patient information and improve clinical and operational efficiencies. Six weeks after the activation of Sunrise Emergency Care, 5,000 clinicians at Long Island Jewish Hospital, Schneider Children’s Hospital and Zucker Hillside Hospital began using Sunrise Clinical Manager to manage patient lists, clinical results (including laboratory, cardiology, radiology, operative notes and ED information) and prescriber order entry for laboratory and radiology studies. Links to PACs and EKG images were also integrated into the software, said Michael Oppenheim, MD, chief medical information officer. “This is a key first-step in the exciting journey towards a fully computerized medical record across our health system,” he said. “We are very pleased with the results of the initial activation. Our clinicians are already actively utilizing (the software) to help access patient and clinical information faster and closer to the point of care.” R. Andrew Eckert, Eclipsys’ president and chief executive officer, said having one system in use across its inpatient and ambulatory facilities will likely allow North Shore-LIJ to achieve high rates of adoption for CPOE. He said a single solution was essential for the health system to start achieving outcome improvements. North Shore-LIJ includes 15 hospitals, three long-term care facilities, a medical research institute, four trauma centers, five home health agencies and dozens of outpatient centers. Health system facilities house more than 6,000 beds. ■ MoRe At HealthcareiTnews.com e connect: LIJ 0208 DOC UM EN T 1-866-639-SLH1 e l connect: StReAMLINe 0208 l http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.streamlinehealth.net http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=8615 http://www.streamlinehealth.net http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=8614 http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=8691
