During that year, thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate members of HIMSS, the clinic has received donations of funds, supplies, health IT software and consulting. This community clinic opened in 2005 within days after Hurricane Katrina and now treats each week more than 200 patients, many of whom do not have health insurance and would otherwise likely not have access to healthcare due to the number of facility closures since Katrina wreaked its devastation. The clinic is one of seven practices that benefited from the HIMSS Katrina Phoenix Project, managed by the HIMSS Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Society dedicated to furthering healthcare IT professionals. Since the early 1990s, the HIMSS Foundation has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to more than 45 exceptional students. A recent statistic suggests 160 million people in the United States have gone online for health information. Nearly three-quarters of respondents indicated they have accessed general reference information, such as information on treatment options and/or wellness information. Half of respondents suggested individuals with chronic diseases, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, would be the population that could benefit the most from the widening availability of online access to healthcare information. IMSS has expanded its Davies Award of Excellence program to recognize Community Health Organizations (CHOs) whose successful EHR implementations are meeting the unique needs of community health in innovative ways. Through this award, CHOs have a venue for sharing model practices, innovative approaches and lessons learned with the larger healthcare community. The new CHO Award joins the Organizational, Ambulatory and Public Health Awards within the Davies Award program. Established in 1994 in honor of Dr. Nicholas Davies, the Davies Awards recognize excellence in the implementation and use of health information technology, specifically EHRs. Written applications for the CHO Award will be accepted from late February through May 30, with site visits taking place late this summer. Recipients will be honored and provided the opportunity (paid for by HIMSS) to for Community Health Organizations HIMSS Unveils New Davies Award present at HIMSS09, April 5-8, 2009, in Chicago. CHOs are uniquely characterized as providing direct patient care and health services to underserved and vulnerable populations. Represented in every state and territory, there are approximately 8,000 ambulatory CHO clinics in the United States that serve a fast-growing population of nearly 20 million Americans. Regardless of a patient's ability to pay, CHOs provide primary care, preventive services, chronic disease management, and often on-site dental, pharmaceutical and mental health services.
