Physician mentors have been a vital component of the success of the HIMSS Katrina Phoenix Project because they worked in-person and remotely with the practices to ensure EMR implementation success. Physician mentors included: Jim Morrow, MD, a 2005 Ambulatory Care Davies Award recipient and vice president and CIO of North Fulton Family Medicine, Cumming, Ga.; Alice Loveys, MD, a 2004 Ambulatory Davies Award of Excellence recipient and practicing physician, Pediatrics @ the Basin, Pittsford, NY; Steve Arnold, MD, MBA, physician consultant and author; and Gary Klein, MD, MBA, MPH, CHS-V, practicing physician and CMIO, Department Homeland Security. Common Ground Health Clinic of The EMR at Common Ground Health Clinic “went live” this month thanks to the software and consulting donated by AllScripts, a HIMSS corporate member. Dr. Morrow secured the software donation and worked with the clinic, as its physician mentor to help guide its EMR implementa- tion. The AllScripts staff and Dr. Morrow also worked on-site to set up, test the software and train the staff. “The generous healthcare providers at Common Ground Health Clinic care for some of the most high-risk individuals in the area who lack easy access to other healthcare resources and depend on this clinic for most aspects of their care,” said Dr. Morrow. “With the imple- mentation of Allscripts HealthMatics, clinic staff now have the ability to track kidney function, blood sugar and hemoglobin a1C, and the need for various other tests. It has been an honor to be involved with this project and bring it to a successful conclusion.” Common Ground received more than $40,000 from HIMSS individual and corporate members, including a $20,000 donation from McKesson, plus other funds from SAIC, Maryland Society, SSI Group, Capsule Tech, MedTech Publishing and API. The HIMSS Foundation also provided payment for four years of software maintenance for the clinic. The donation of the Allscripts EMR and required EMR was supplemented by Ergotron's donation of two flat panel carts with power, and DecisionOne's three 21-inch monitors and four DVDRWs.
