One of the rules of the contest stipulated that only one vote per computer per day would be counted. Among other guidelines set forth by Siemens, the hospital could have no more than 150 beds, it couldn’t have an on-site MRI service, and the video it submitted had to be created entirely by hospital staff. Also, contest rules stipulated that the winning hospital must be able to install the MRI on-site within six months of the contest. Randy Hill, vice president of Siemens Medical Solutions’ Service Division, said Siemens met two goals with this contest - one to create awareness about the lack of access to on-site, fixed MRI technology in rural communities, and the other to create awareness about the company’s new $800,000 Magnetom Essenza MRI, which was brought to market in October 2007. Clare Haar, chief executive officer of 134-bed Lockport Memorial Hospital, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital, saying, “This was a win for the entire community. Our hospital has benefited greatly from all the media coverage, and we feel that overall this contest’s impact has been extremely positive for us. The new MRI will be a tremendous benefit to the services that we provide and will improve quality of care.” Sumter Regional, a 143 bedcommunity non-profit hospital, submitted its “Blown Away” video to the contest, depicting the destructive tornado that swept through Americus in March, wiping out the hospital and its services. The hospital plans to open a new facility in 2010. “Today’s announcement has made winners of us all,” said David Seagraves, president and CEO of Sumter Regional Hospital, at a Jan. 25 press conference announcing the gift. “Siemens stands in solidarity with Sumter and hopes that the donation of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA will play an important role in helping the facility start anew and offer the best care possible,” he said. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: coNteSt 0208 sEE us aT HIMss08 BooTH #2215 e ● Connect: Datalux 0208 ● http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.datalux.com http://www.datalux.com http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=8644 http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=8717
