Philip Bradley is an active first-year member of the HIMSS Financial Systems Steering Committee. The vice president of information systems at Harris County Hospital District, Mr. Bradley led the planning and recruiting of speakers for the HIMSS Financial Systems J A N U A R Y SPIRIT OF HIMSS AWARD ICD-10 webinar on Dec. 3, 2008. His volunteer efforts in developing the presentation garnered record-breaking attendance for a financial systems webinar, with 354 participants. The presentation sparked much interest from attendees, and as a result, the formation of a new HIMSS Work Group is planned for next fiscal year. Mr. Bradley has also volunteered on the HIMSS Financial Systems Transactions Toolkit Task Force and is a member of the Microsoft Health Users Group and the HIMSS South Central Tammy J. Grygar and Janet L.F Smith are . dedicated leaders of HIMSS' Small and Independent Consultants Special Interest Group (SIC SIG). Their combined efforts produced a new resource, the “Consulting MBA Program,” and they have been instrumental in recruiting speakers and encouraging participation in the SIG program. Through their outreach, Ms. Grygar and Ms. Smith have reinforced the relationship between HIMSS and its Texas Chapter. members, and increased awareness of benefits. Ms. Grygar, the co-chair of the SIC SIG, is currently an independent consultant. Ms. Smith is a member of the SIC SIG and principal of Janet L.F. Smith & Associates LLC. The HIMSS Northern California Chapter Social Event Committee planned and executed the inaugural Northern California Chapter Social Event this past August. The committee came together with limited time to plan this event, which was held at a wine store overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Attendees enjoyed tastings and an evening of networking and fun. Attendance, 72 Chapter Members and friends, more than doubled the committee's expectations. The event, as a result of the committee's efforts, was greatly supported by members. Committee members include Chapter Board Members Robert Skok, managing director, Kaiser Permanente; Steve Edison, FHIMSS, Computer Sciences Foundation; and Chris Hottinger, vice president, Lumetra. All of these members truly represent the Spirit of HIMSS through their dedicated volunteer efforts to the Society and the industry. I Nominations for the Spirit of HIMSS Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration. Nominations should be submitted to HIMSS Member Services Program Manager Jessica Bird at jbird@himss.org, and should include a brief description explaining the accomplishments of the member and how he or she earns the recognition of the Spirit of HIMSS. Recipients will be selected and announced in the HIMSS Insider and HIMSS Weekly Insider.
