The smaller standalone vendors are “probably still selling into the specialty hospitals,” he noted, but most solutions for larger hospitals are being developed as part of an enterprise platform. Providers are therefore considering pharmacy IT part of a “closed loop” process. “If you’ve got Cerner, you’ve got them for pharmacy, too. In the emergency department, for example, many providers are still buying standalone solutions, but that’s not the case in pharmacy,” Hess said. Many vendors, including McKesson and Cerner, also offer hardware such as a medication dispensing cabinet for use on the hospital floor. information technology executives who make decisions about IT systems purchases are likely to look for a system offered by vendors they know.
