By BerNIe MoNegaIN, Editor NEW ORLEANS – The Ochsner Health System is rolling out technology to automate surgical processes. Ochsner, which includes seven hospitals and 33 health centers throughout southeast Louisiana, selected technology developed by Mobile, Ala-based DocuSys Inc. The new software includes anesthesia information management, medication management and presurgical care management systems. “With the acquisition and implementation of DocuSys, Ochsner will strategically focus on enhancing anesthesia medication management and dispensation, and anesthesia medication inventory, with the aim of creating a superior anesthesia record,” said Mark French, vice president of surgical services at Ochsner. The technology will be installed in 28 operating rooms and 15 other anesthetizing locations at Ochsner Medical Center and the OchsnerMerrill Hines Surgery Center in New Orleans. Among the solutions Ochsner selected are: ■ A Web-based, patient-driven health survey application, HealthQuestionnaire, used for collecting a patient’s health history prior to surgery; ■ PreOpPlanner, used by the care team to identify the patient’s surgical risk and produce instructions and testing requirements for the patient prior to surgery; ■ A coding module for documenting existing illnesses and cap- turing professional fees; ■ The anesthesia management system, which produces an electronic medical record of the anesthetic case; and ■ DocuSys’ point-of-care medication management application, DocuJect, providing a decision support feature that documents medications administered. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: oCHSNer 0408 l deCIsIoN Continued from page 11 lessons from this body of work will further enhance the nation’s efforts to make evidence-based clinical knowledge more readily available to healthcare providers.” Clancy said the two institutions would incorporate clinical decision support into widely used health IT products, demonstrate cross-platform utility and establish lessons learned for clinical decision support implementation for healthcare IT vendors. The projects will implement clinical decision support tools in products certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology and apply guidelines set by the American National Standards Institute’s Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel. Researchers will build on rapidly evolving knowledge from development and implementation activities to define effective clinical decision support tools and identify preferred methods and processes for incorporating these tools into electronic medical records and in busy practice settings, Clancy said. The research will assess potential benefits and drawbacks of clinical decision support services, including effects on patient satisfaction, measures of efficiency, cost and risk. Researchers also will evaluate methods of creating, storing and replicating clinical decision support elements across multiple clinical sites and ambulatory practices. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: DeCISIoN 0408 Surgery makes us a little queasy.
