The ability to share Veriphy’s audit trail across multiple systems through the VIS product is an extension that will help more hospitals get on board with best practices in clinical communications.” Without Veriphy, said White, “everyone makes phone calls, burning 10 to 20 hours a day of an April 2008 expensive resource. And the reality is, they make mistakes. It’s a very inefficient process.” According to White, 58 percent of hospitals surveyed by the Joint Commission fail to meet requirements for communication of critical test results. “The communication of critical test results amongst caregivers can mean the difference between a patient’s life or death,” added Peter White, Tom’s brother and Veriphy’s general manager. “With VIS, we’re removing barriers so all ■ Healthcare IT News 33 vErIpHy Continued from page 31 and enterprise-wide clinical information systems. “Historically this has been a siloed environment,” said Tom White, vice president of Dictaphone’s Veriphy division. “When hospitals have to communicate critical diagnostic results, they go off the IT backplain and into a phone call.” Dictaphone’s Windows-based application integration platform is designed to integrate with hospitals and labs can effectively manage their critical test results for improved patient safety and increased provider productivity without worrying about integration roadblocks.” Next up for Veriphy, said Tom White, is an integration with critical clinical communications, such as nurse communications and doctor consults. “It’s going to broaden out beyond diagnostics,” he said. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: VeriPHy 0408 ● aCCEss Continued from page 31 Encentuate, which competes with the likes of Sentillion, CA, Carefx, Passlogix and Imprivata in the SSO field, markets its ability to be flexible. Users gaining access through SSO technology can be re-authorized after moving to another station with any number of tools, ranging from tokens and smart cards to biometrics or photo badges. “There are multiple ways that a second factor (of authentication) can be used,” Anthony said. “That’s an important consideration … in hospitals.” Ensuring the security of sensitive healthcare data and vetting the identities of those accessing that data have long been hot topics in the healthcare world, and news reports of security breaches at hospitals or other healthcare providers are an almost monthly occurrence. The establishment of federal regulations set forth in HIPAA and Sarbannes-Oxley have brought identity and access management providers into the limelight, and according to a February 2008 Forrester Research report, that industry will grow from $2.6 billion in current business to more than $12.3 billion by 2014. That’s where Encentuate’s audit and reporting tools come in handy. “You’re trying to get ahead and close as many holes as you can while trying to increase accountability,” Anthony said. Encentuate technology will be offered as part of IBM’s Tivoli Access Manager suite, and officials expect to integrate it into Identity Manager, Federated Identity Manager, Compliance Insight Manager and Security Operations Manager. Both Anthony and E.K. Koh, Encentuate’s vice president of products, say SSO technology is gaining in popularity, particularly as an entry point for a healthcare system, and as long as risk management plays a part in the program. “I think there’s definitely a lot to be done, but customers have to do it in phases,” said Koh. “The market is headed toward more integration, toward end-to-end provisioning.” ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: acceSS 0408 Taking care of the little things makes all the difference.
