Fox Memorial Hospital in upstate New York has signed a multi-million dollar agreement to implement an electronic health records system spanning both inpatient and outpatient settings. The hospital, based in New York’s rural Otsego County, will adopt a suite of healthcare IT software from the Atlanta-based McKesson Corp., including pharmacy automation technologies. Fox Memorial has been a longtime user of McKesson’s practice management software. A single EHR system will allow providers at Fox Memorial to review patient information across hospital departments and even extend digital information access into participating physician offices, say hospital executives. “Our goal is to provide all authorized clinicians with real-time access to the latest test results, staff documentation notes and diagnostic images as the patient progresses through the care process,” said John R. Remillard, president and chief executive officer at Fox Memorial. “By deploying these technology tools, we’ll no longer need to track down vital patient information on a paper chart or solely rely upon the patients as the keepers of their allergy information and previous medical history.” In the hospital setting, Fox Memorial plans to deploy an emergency department information system that includes electronic tracking boards. Nurses will have access to handheld, bar-code medication administration scanning devices. ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: NeWYorK 0508 l “organizations need to take a second look at who has access to what – Laurie Rinehart-Thompson “Organizations need to take a second look at who has access to what and across-the-board restrict access as much as possible without compromising patient care,” she said. Jamie Husher, director of health information management and privacy officer at the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in Sioux Falls, S.D., said security breaches show the basic need to control employee behavior. “We can implement changes all day long but if people don’t practice good behaviors we’ll never accomplish what is needed,” Husher said. “I think we need to keep in front of our employees that they are dealing with highly confidential information that doesn’t belong to them. They need to be trained and know that we will follow our sanction policies to resolve security breaches resulting from activities like not storing laptops appropriately or accessing records they have no need Wendy Mangin to see.” AHIMA President Wendy Mangin, director of medical records and privacy officer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind., said privacy education is an ongoing concern. “The breach of George Clooney’s records is a perfect example which I cover in our new employee orientation when I talk about egregious breaches,” Mangin said. “I make the point that even if we’re not taking care of famous people, it still is a very serious issue when protected health information is released inappropriately. We also talk with all employees throughout the year. During our annual education day we include privacy and security training along with things like infection control, fire safety, disaster training, etc. So part of it is raising awareness. It’s something you constantly have to hit.” ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: SeCUrItY 0508 Easy. Ergonomic. Economic.
