First, physician groups need to determine whether to go with a vendor that provides both practice management and EHR solutions for seamless access to patient data or a vendor that integrates applications via interfaces. As for the actual implementation, Peterson said physician groups would do well to avoid the “big bang” method and instead do rollouts. Replicating the implementation process in clusters allows for a more successful project because both vendor and office can monitor and adjust the different pieces of functionality going forward. The photos here illustrate a room of documents before and after implementation of electronic health records. The inset at the top shows the room stuffed with paper files. p r o d u c t s p ot l ig h t i By PaTTy Enrado, Contributing Editor MPLEMENTATION of ambulatory electronic more information at healthcareitnews.com recent news ➔ Allscripts-Misys merger means short-term pain, long-term gain ➔ MediNotes, Akamai to provide EHRs to Hawaii docs ➔ CCHIT invitation ➔ EHR to connect independent docs ➔ Allscripts buys ECIN for $90M ➔ NextGen in Vendor Notebook ➔ Docs need EHRs, but don’t count on ROI ➔ EHR adoption an “ugly process,” but CCHIT can improve appeal ➔ EHR vendors focused on interoperability ➔ Docs to get ambulatory EHRs from Catholic health system resource central ➔ Datamonitor Market Focus Report: Understanding the Industry Drivers for Electronic Health Records ➔ HIMSS Analytics Market Overview Report: Market Opportunities in Ambulatory Software Applications three trends to watch Jared Peterson, vice president of operations for KLAS Enterprises, names three EHR market drivers: 1. one solution: Vendors are positioning themselves to offer complete practice management and electronic medical record solutions. 2. small practices: Large hospitals and IPAs are rolling out EMR functionality to smaller practices as a business strategy. 3. getting serious: Since the advent of changes in the Stark Law, providers are moving from the conversation stage to the investigation and plan development stage. positioned to offer one solution AllscRipts touchworks ehr The award-winning TouchWorks EHR radically simplifies the art, science and process of caring for patients.
