Martich has 10 practicing physicians on his staff that spend 30 percent of their day working on IT projects, and he lauds AMDIS for its efforts to advance the field. “Healthcare informatics is still largely an art form rather than a science,” Martich said. “AMDIS provides a forum for like-minded physicians to compare and contrast how their hospitals and practices use IT. There is not a good understanding of the CMIO role generally, so we have to learn to make it our own.” Martich is a featured speaker at the 2008 Symposium, and will discuss physician adoption of IT in the ambulatory space as well as interoperability issues. As the tone of the AMDIS Symposium is practical, the networking component of the event is very important, said Howard Landa, MD, vice chairman of AMDIS and CMIO at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group in Honolulu. “One big thing about AMDIS is that people talk about projects that have worked,” Landa said. “We want people to walk away from the meeting with a lot of contacts. As a group, people in AMDIS are willing to share all of their experience. It’s refreshing to go to a conference that deals with corporate and informatics issues but has the openness of a medical perspective.” ■ More at deMo Continued from page 17 quality of care they provide their patients. This is another incredible step forward in our work to ensure access to quality health care for all Louisianans.” The other communities selected for the demo are: Alabama; Delaware; Jacksonville, Fla.; Georgia; Maryland/Washington, D.C.; Oklahoma; Pittsburgh; South Dakota; Virginia; and Madison, Wis. One hundred small physician practices (from three to 10 physicians) in each community will select and implement an electronic health record system paid for by the government. Each participating physician could earn $58,000 in incentives over the project’s five-year time span, while practices can earn a maximum of $290,000. AMDIS is the professional “home” of the chief medical information officer, or CMIO, and the Symposium the organization holds annually in Ojai, Calif., (July 15-18 this year) offers an extensive program on practical and theoretical healthcare IT issues for physicians. The Symposium’s program is based on two books – The Physician-Computer Connection and The Physician-Computer Conundrum – written by Bria and Richard Rydell, president and CEO of AMDIS. Rydell said the Symposium is highly interactive, encouraging give-and-take between speakers and attendees. “Our members have been leaders in the healthcare IT field for a long time,” said Rydell. “Many of them are CMIOs, but others are chief medical officers, and some have migrated into the CIO role. Users of the latter site can remain anonymous, however, and the business models are slightly different. Gary Klein, MD, president-elect of the American Gary Klein, MD Academy of Disaster Medicine and a member of the Ozmosis medical advisory board, surmises that Web-savvy physicians will likely be members of both sites. “Medicine today is practiced in a vacuum,” Klein said. “The beauty of Ozmosis is that it creates a virtual doctors’ lounge. It’s a safe place to go and ask questions of other physicians. Healthcare may be one of the last adopters of technology, but a concept like this really gets you excited about the future.” ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e ●Connect: ozMoSIS 0708 http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://HealthcareITnews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=9553 http://HealthcareITnews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=9554 http://www.compucaddy.com http://HealthcareITnews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=9555 http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=9528
