Charles E. Christian, FCHIME, FHIMSS, and Liz Johnson, RN, MSN, FHIMSS, began their terms as chair and vice chair, respectively. They replace Chair John Wade, FCHIME, FHIMSS, and Vice Chair Victoria Bradley, DNP, RN, CPHIMS, FHIMSS. Mr. Christian is the director of information systems and CIO of Good Samaritan Hospital, a 100-year-old, free-standing acute care community hospital in southwest Indiana. He is serving his 19th year in this role and his 37th year in healthcare. Good Samaritan Hospital received the McKesson VIP Award in 2004; identified as a Solucient Top 100 Hospital - Quality Improvement Leader in 2005; listed as Most Wired (small and rural) in 2004 and 2005; a 2006 recipient of the VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence; and a 2008 recipient of the VHA Leadership Award in Supply Chain Management. “I have been a long-time advocate of utilizing healthcare IT to improve our healthcare system at the local, statewide and national level,” Mr. Christian explained. “And humbled by the fact that I have this privilege to serve as chair and participate in the advancement of healthcare IT.” Mr. Christian notes he is excited about exploring the idea of an online social networking-type forum in the coming year. “HIMSS is a large tent: We are a very diverse group and numerous communities have arisen over the past few years,” he said. “We need to give these professionals who have like interests the opportunity to collaborate, share their thoughts, learn HE HIMSS BOARD OF DIRECTORS New Board Members Begin Terms Sharing Knowledge, Building Synergy HIMSS Organizational Affiliate Program H ealthcare organizations are looking for new ways to bridge the knowledge gap and build consensus among all their disparate HIT stakeholders. OFFICERS [continued on page 22] Organizational Affiliate at McClaren Hospital Through its Organizational Affiliate Membership, McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, has about 12 staffers signed on as HIMSS' individual members. “It's mostly director and VP-level people who are not IT professionals but want access to reports and information about IT and to learn what's happening out there in the IT world,” reports CEO Don Kooy, FACHE. AFFILIATE [continued on page 23] Hundreds Gather in Washington for National Health IT Week Recently, a former University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center employee was criminally indicted for allegedly accessing the medical records of celebrity patients and selling the information to media outlets. Nearly one-third of respondents believed the publicity surrounding breaches of patient data will have a negative impact on the adoption of electronic medical records, despite the fact respondents were most likely to identify paper medical records as most vulnerable to a security breach. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director Dr. Peter Orszag also addressed the Summit and presented a candid look into the budget debate over healthcare reform that is likely to occur with the new Congress and Administration.
