Collectively, the advocates delivered handouts to all 540 congressional offices (this includes five delegates offices) and visited 199 members of Congress and their staff (75 Senate offices and 124 House offices), of which almost 30 percent were meetings with senators and representatives. The advocates also participated in two eventful days of training sessions, panel discussions on privacy and security, interoperability and the successes of the Nicholas E. Davies Award recipients. Over the next several months, HIMSS and its 35 Advocacy Day partners will remain actively involved in promoting healthcare IT and management systems funding and the passage of appropriate legislation, such as H.R. 3800 and S. 1693, and S. 2408 and H.R. 4296. During the National Health IT Week press conference on Capitol Hill, the HIMSS Foundation launched a new Institute for e-Health Policy, which will provide educational opportunities in the Washington, DC, area for public- and private-sector stakeholders who both make and are impacted by e-health policy decisions. “Policy decisions made in Washington, DC, have a tremendous impact on e-health initiatives across the nation,” said Carla Smith, HIMSS executive vice president, during the press confer- ence. “These policy decisions often have a direct effect on whether or not healthcare organizations can correct health disparities using information technology in rural and underserved communities, enable workforces through technology training, and provide needed staffing and financial resources to e-health.” The institute will administer HIMSS involve- WELCOME GOLD NEW CORPORATE MEMBERS Metrologic Instruments Inc. JHIM Seeks Articles on Process Improvement JHIM, the peer-reviewed journal of HIMSS, is seeking abstracts for its Winter 2009 topic: “Process Improvement: Best Practices and Lessons Learned.” JHIM is particularly interested in: • Process improvement strategies that incorporate Lean or Six Sigma concepts in the healthcare setting. • Perspectives from healthcare staff that incorporate practical advice and real-world solutions. • Challenges, including integration, training and workflow. • Best practices and lessons learned in workflow redesign and results measurements. • Case studies, current research literature reviews, industry comparisons, think pieces and position papers. JHIM's primary audience includes healthcare professionals in hospitals, corporate systems, clinical practice groups, vendor organizations, consulting firms and government settings. HIMSS seeks articles and proposals firmly grounded in defining challenges and offering solutions for leaders in healthcare organizations. Abstract proposals should not exceed 250 words. They should include a working title and a list of all potential authors and full contact information. Send abstracts as e-mail attachments to Senior Editor Matt Schlossberg at mschlossberg@himss.org by July 14. In addition, JHIM has released its editorial calendar for 2009. Deadlines are forthcoming: Winter 2009: Process Improvement: Lean; Six Sigma and the Healthcare Setting: Best Practices and Lessons Learned in Workflow Redesign and Results Measurements Spring 2009: Privacy & Security Summer 2009: CPOE & Physician/Clinician Documentation - Moving Past the Hand-Written Note Fall 2009: Medication Management For more information on JHIM, visit www.himss.org/jhim. I Organizational Affiliates also get exclusive access to the HIMSS eLearning Academy, which provides 24/7 access to content-rich online education. Refreshed regularly, the Academy provides best practices, case studies, certification and content-rich education that can be shared by employees throughout an organization, thus serving as a cost-efficient, flexible education tool for Organizational Affiliates. (The August issue of the HIMSS Insider will take a closer look at the education tools and resources available through the eLearning Academy.) AFFILIATE [continued from page 21] Mr. Kooy sees the education offered through the Organizational Affiliate Program as a source for not only increasing staffers' IT knowledge, but for improving his organization's IT adoption. McLaren Regional Medical Center is part of an integrated healthcare system that includes 7 hospitals, 8 sub-acute facilities, 93 ambulatory facilities, 3 Home Health Care facilities and 1 Free-Standing Data Center. “In an organization as large as ours, everybody is asking for everything all the time,” Mr. Kooy points out. “Every year, we have probably three times as many requests for funding as dollars we're going to spend on new IT tools and technologies. “[The Organizational n the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, HIMSS “adopted” the Common Ground Health Clinic (CGHC) in the Algiers section of New Orleans. A free community clinic, Common Ground opened within days after Hurricane Katrina and now treats each week more than 200 patients, many of whom do not have health insurance and would otherwise likely not have access to healthcare due to healthcare facility closures since Hurricane Katrina. CGHC received donations of funds, supplies, health IT software and consulting, thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate members of HIMSS. The donations have continued. Midmark Diagnostics Group recently donated an EKG machine to the clinic. In thanking Midmark for its generous donation, Anne Mulle, a family nurse practitioner at CGHC, noted: “We are in great need of an EKG and often have to send many patients to the emergency room for an EKG, when it is usually something that could be handled in the office. The machine will be a great addition to our clinic and I am very thankful to both you and HIMSS for supporting us.” CGHC is one of seven practices that benefited from the HIMSS Katrina Phoenix Project, managed by the HIMSS Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Society dedicated to furthering healthcare IT professionals. Since the early 1990s, the HIMSS Foundation has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to more than 45 exceptional students. For this project, the Foundation managed all monetary and acquisition of software and affiliated services donations to the medical practices. I Donations to Common Ground Clinic Continue For more information on CGHC, visit www.cghc.org.
