Healthcare IT News - July 2008 - (Page 25) www.HealthcareITNews.com July 2008 I Healthcare IT News 25 Bob Dichter and John Sharp Recipients of the May 2008 Spirit of HIMSS Award ob Dichter and John Sharp, joint recipients of the May Spirit of HIMSS Award, have worked tirelessly to support HIMSS healthcare IT initiatives that they are not only passionate about but important to the advancement of healthcare IT. Bob Dichter B MAY SPIRIT OF HIMSS AWARD Mr. Dichter single-handedly organized a program sponsored by the New England Chapter on public policy in April, which was an enormous success and assembled an audience of over 200 people. The event was very well received by the attendees who had the opportunity to listen to noteworthy speakers: Blackford Middleton, MD, MPH, MSc, FACP, FACMI, FHIMSS corporate director, clinical informatics, R&D, and chairman, Center for IT Leadership, Partners HealthCare; and Massachusetts Sen. Richard Moore, Senate Chairman, Joint Committee on Health Care Financing. Also speaking at this program was Dr. Karen Bell, director, Office of Health IT Adoption, Office of the National Coordinator. Through his relentless work in organizing the public policy program over the past several years, this event has become one of the Chapter's signature meetings. His persistence allowed the program to offer these prestigious speakers to Chapter and local industry leaders as well. Mr. Dichter is a truly deserving recipient of the Spirit of HIMSS Award for his outstanding work in organizing and managing this very successful program, and genuine drive to make the Chapter and HIMSS successful. Mr. Dichter has always been a solid contributor to the New England Chapter, having worked on many committees over the past 10 years, including the Chapter's Board for nearly 10 years. He is a past president of the Chapter, has organized many educational events and is currently serving as the advocacy chair. His company, Optimal Practice, is a consulting firm that focuses on physician practices, helping them to identify and implement appropriate processes and technologies, to improve productivity, profitability, clinical outcomes, and patient and staff satisfaction. John Sharp has been instrumental in supporting the work of the Consumer Organization Outreach (COO) Task Force. This past year, Mr. Sharp was the chair of the work group to complete the Consumerism Position Statement. Not only did Mr. Sharp organize this position statement team to complete the deliverables, he was the primary author. He has had several responsibilities within HIMSS: chair of the eHealth SIG for three years, a member of the Community Outreach Task Force of the Personal Health Record Steering Committee for two years, and a member of the Project Management SIG. He has presented at the annual conference in 2003, 2006 and 2008 in educational sessions, and in 2007 through an e-session. He has always volunteered to participate in work groups associated with the COO Task Force and other initiatives. Mr. Sharp has also volunteered his organization to support the many needs of the PHR community, and he continues to be a key resource for HIMSS' volunteers. Mr. Sharp is currently the manager, clinical research informatics in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at the Cleveland Clinic. Previously he served as project manager for Web services at Cleveland Clinic for eight years in healthcare IT and has served as a project management professional since 2005. His interest areas include research informatics, personal health records, service oriented architecture, e-health, Windows Sharepoint Services, and Web 2.0. I Nominations for the Spirit of HIMSS Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration. Nominations should be submitted to HIMSS Member Services Manager Jessica Bird at jbird@himss.org, and should include a brief description explaining the accomplishments of the member and how he or she earns the recognition of the Spirit of HIMSS. Recipients will be selected and announced in the HIMSS Insider and HIMSS Weekly Insider. One annual honoree is selected from the recipients each year.
