Chief among the uses being targeted by Panasonic is healthcare, where physicians and other healthcare providers need the mobility, ruggedness and power and memory that a UMPC is designed to provide. Company officials say the CF-U1 can be used for barcode medication administration, vitals capture, review of electronic medical records and home healthcare, among others. Developed originally under the Windows Origami program, UMPCs have had a checkered history, suffering primarily from a lack of power and memory to run complicated programs. With advances in technology, however, have come plans from several PC makers to launch their own versions. Taiwan’s Asus got the ball rolling in 2007 with its 7- to 8.9-inch Eee PC. HP has its Mini-Note, Fujitsu has the LifeBook and Samsung is marketing the Q1 Ultra, while Dell is currently working on a “Mini Inspiron” and Acer plans to introduce the “Inspire One” this year. Also in the mix are Toshiba and Switchback, which is marketing a 5.6-inch UMPC that includes a swappable battery, renewable hard drive and rugged, customizable design for outdoor uses. The company touts the ruggedness of its entire Toughbook line. At a press conference in New York last month unveiling the CF-U1, Panasonic Computer Solutions President Rance M. Poehler dropped the UMPC from a height of six feet onto the carpet, then picked it up and continued to operate it. He pointed out that the device is designed to withstand a four-foot drop onto concrete 26 times in a row. “The entrance of the largest rugged notebook manufacturer into the UMPC market is a key validation of the UMPC for enterprise applications,” said David Krebs, an analyst with the Venture Development Corporation, in remarks provided by Motorola. “VDC’s research validates that UMPCs will receive strong consideration for enterprise applications that require a balance of device portability and application richness and functionality that an x86 device with a full OS provides.” Among the CF-U1’s selling points, Davidson says, is a 5.6-inch display screen with a full Qwerty keyboard, an external, multibay battery charger, integration for cameras, fingerprint readers, touch-screen keyboard capabilities, barcode/RFID scanners and wireless devices. The CF-U1 also operates on the full-function Windows XP and Windows Vista ● Tenet Healthcare Corp. has agreed to sell its majority stake in Broadlane, a technology-oriented healthcare services company, to TowerBrook Capital Partners in a $155 million cash deal.
