A recent report funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and released by the National Alliance for Health IT proposes definitions to several key terms to eliminate confusion around the terms and to provide healthcare stakeholders with a common understanding of the important components of health information technology infrastructure. Nearly two-thirds of respondents noted the terms EHR and EMR would most benefit from this type of definition. It was understood this common language, in and of itself, will not produce results. For results to occur, two thirds of respondents noted it is critical for there to be recognition of a body of standards that enables a working level of interoperability. NE OF HIMSS' OBJECTIVES is to create a comprehensive distance education environment for its members. Through the Society's newest distance education offering, healthcare organizations can access high quality, timely healthcare IT professional development content, designed to meet the training needs of IT professionals and clinical staff–all in a cost-effective manner. The eLearning Academy, (eLA), available at www.himss.org/elearning, is a Webbased, online learning system enabling the management and delivery of educational content to learners. With budget restrictions and time constraints making it increasingly challenging for professionals to attend offsite training, the eLA environment provides a viable, cost-effective alternative. The eLA provides a single unique focus on health IT content in a 24/7, on-demand, flexible and SCORM-1.2 compliant format. For customers with an existing learning Where Healthcare Education Meets IT Innovation management system (LMS), the option exists to create a dynamic link between the HIMSS LMS and the user's LMS products, though access directly to the HIMSS LMS through a Web browser will optimize course functionality. The eLA is available to members (Individual, Corporate and Organizational Affiliate) and non-members; bulk purchasing is available. Courses and content leverage HIMSS' 45-plus years in the healthcare IT and management systems industry, delivering dynamic educational programming for all areas of the industry. eLA Course Catalog Like no other training delivery, e-learning provides a single experience accommodating the three distinct learning styles of auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. Abstracts and reviewers are needed for research papers valuable to healthcare IT professionals, clinicians and scholars. Each year, the Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition draws 25,000-plus attendees and over 900 exhibitors. The intent of the Academic Forum is to encourage practitioners and vendors to observe current research that has a practical application to the world of healthcare information technology. Abstract submissions should be focused on timely research in healthcare information technology and management systems, and have practical application in healthcare settings and academic communities. There is no theme for the Academic Forum, so a wide range of topics will be considered. Abstracts should be no longer than two pages double spaced. The abstract must: describe the research issue and methodology; provide a summary of conclusions or recommendations; and explain why healthcare IT professionals, clinicians and scholars would benefit from this research. Deadline for submission is Sept. 15; abstract submissions must be accompanied with a one-page resume. The peer-review process will evaluate abstracts based on: the applied nature of the research, applicability to the healthcare IT industry, rigor of methodology and clarity of presentation. Authors will be notified of acceptance by Oct. 15. Reviewers are needed to review and score the two-page abstract submissions. Healthcare IT and management systems professionals and educators interested in becoming reviewers must complete and submit an application via fax.
