Healthcare IT News - August 2008 - (Page 28) 28 The HIMSS Insider s August 2008 www.himss.org Award Recipients Raise Awareness of HIT's Crucial Role in Healthcare Transformation T 2008 PA HIT Advocacy Day Planning Committee hrough their tireless efforts, the recipients of the June 2008 Spirit of HIMSS Award, the 2008 Pennsylvania HIT Advocacy Day Planning Committee and Linda Macomber, RN, MBA, have raised awareness of the ongoing transformation of healthcare using healthcare IT and management systems. JUNE SPIRIT OF HIMSS AWARD The 2008 PA HIT Advocacy Day Planning Committee, comprised of Delaware Valley Chapter and Western Pennsylvania Chapter representatives, hosted the 1st Annual Advocacy Day in the state of Pennsylvania on May 12. To plan the event, work groups, including Policy, Legislative Outreach, Sponsors, Facilities and Communications, were established to ensure all details were identified and completed. The committee's collective efforts greatly increased Pennsylvania's legislators' awareness that HIMSS is the “go-to” source for healthcare IT and management systems information. Legislators proclaimed May 12 as “Pennsylvania Healthcare IT Awareness Day.” Members of the 2008 Pennsylvania HIT Advocacy Day Planning Committee are: Mark Stevens, and Charlene Underwood, MBA, FHIMSS, Co-Chairs Bruce Marcolongo, President, Delaware Valley Chapter Barry Ross, LFHIMSS, MHSA, MSIE, President, Western Pennsylvania Chapter Nancy Bucceri, CPHIMS, Communications Work Group Chair JoAnn Klinedinst, PMP, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, Legislative Outreach Work Group Chair Tim Schoener, CPHIMS, FHIMSS Facilities Work Group Planning Committee Members: Sharon Dorogy; Gail Malcolm, FACHE, LFHIMSS; Mickey McGlynn; Peg Meadow; Sean O'Rourke; Jennifer Pojedinec ; Kim Slocum and Jay Srini, FHIMSS Demonstrating their dedication and leadership, the committee organized an exceptional event, with 80 attendees and 110 legislative appointments. Linda Travis Macomber, RN, BSN, MBA, was pivotal in the development, launch and promotion of the newly created Nicholas E. Davies Community Health Organization (CHO) Award; the Davies Awards recognize excellence in the implementation and use of health information technology. Ms. Macomber's contributions to the initial Davies CHO Work Group led to her nomination as chair of the Davies CHO Award. She contributed significant content to the award application, clarified important details regarding eligibility and leveraged her experience and knowledge of the CHO industry. In addition, she contributed to developing the new scoring guide for this award, while streamlining the submission process. Without her leadership, work effort and support, this award would have not been created. For more than 23 years, Ms. Macomber has focused on health IT, electronic health records, clinical/nursing informatics and technology-enabled workflow/quality improvement. She has managed large multipartner initiatives from vendor, healthcare delivery and national consulting firm perspectives. Today, from both a strategic and practical perspective, Ms. Macomber assists organizations, leaders, healthcare practitioners and educators in effectively adopting innovative information technology. s Linda Travis Macomber Nominations for the Spirit of HIMSS Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration. Nominations should be submitted to HIMSS Member Services Program Manager Jessica Bird at jbird@himss.org, and should include a brief description explaining the accomplishments of the member and how he or she earns the recognition of the Spirit of HIMSS. Recipients will be selected and announced in the HIMSS Insider and HIMSS Weekly Insider. HIMSS AsiaPac09 call for papers and proposals HIMSS is seeking papers and proposals on IT development in the Asia-Pacific region for the AsiaPac09 Conference & Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur this February. Papers can be submitted for consideration until Sept. 8. Presentations should stimulate discussion of issues and collaborative exchanges, and include practical information from hospitals, clinics and clinicians on their IT implementation experience in the Asia-Pacific region and other areas internationally. The majority of proposals selected will reflect geographic balance within the region as well as balance between topic areas and the practical usage in the region.
