Revenue is generated for hospitals and physicians through a pay-for-performance structure, immediate decision-making increases patient and provider satisfaction and the elimination of inappropriate or unnecessary tests lowers payers’ medical expense trend. For patients, Noffsinger said, “It’s flat-out better medicine.” SafeMed collaborated with BCBSMA, BIDPO and BIDMC in graNTs Continued from page 30 suPPorT Continued from page 30 management. The service is integrated into the practice’s system and the PHR is linked to the physician’s Web site. Patients can conduct secure online transactions such as prescription refills and appointment scheduling at their convenience. The time it takes to schedule an appointment via telephone is equal to scheduling three appointments online, Mau said. The service is available not only for MMO members, which Mau said appeals to physicians who deal with multiple health plans, but by the end of 2008, he said, patients who are MMO members will be able to have their PHRs pre-populated with MMO-derived data. Henry DePhillips, MD, Medem’s CMO, said online consultations are another value-add for the service, especially now that major payers such as Cigna and Aetna are reimbursing for e-visits. He cited two anecdotal trends from physicians that online consultations reduced patient traffic in the office by as much as 10 percent and the time reserved for six e-visits equals one in-office visit. Mau said MMO is “keeping an eye” on online consultations, but data thus far doesn’t support greater adoption when insurers reimburse. He said reimbursing would require MMO to develop rules and regulations for online consultations. Lynne Dunbrack, program director at Health Industry Insights, an IDC company, said online consultations and electronic transactions offer many benefits for stakeholders, including increased physician office staff productivity by reducing phone calls and interruptions, health plan product differentiation, employer productivity gains by reducing absenteeism and convenience for patients. Dunbrack said a direct-topatient model could be a revenue stream for physicians. “As consumers have more opportunities to do online activities, the demand for the same capabilities within the healthcare realm will grow,” she said. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: oHio 0808 Taking care of the little things makes all the difference.
