Founded in 2004 with support from AMIA and HIMSS, ANI is a collaboration of organizations that together represent a unified voice for nursing informatics. Today, ANI has grown to include 25 member organizations and represents more than 3,000 nurses, bringing together distinct nursing informatics groups in the United States that function separately at local, regional, national and international levels. ANI serves a single point of connection between nursing informatics individuals and groups and the broader community of 2.9 million nurses. New members in 2007 include the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, the Association of Women’s Health Obstetric & Neonatal Nurses, Cerner Nursing Advisory Board, MEDITECH Nurse Informatics program, NANDA International and SNOMED CT Nursing Working Group. Currently, ANI is embarking on further development of a united voice for nursing informatics by providing responses to national initiatives. These include contributing comments on the American Nurses Association’s revised Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards. This document expands upon earlier work, building upon historical knowledge and including new, state- of-the-science material for the specialty. A response was also submitted on the formation of the Google Health Advisory Committee; in the formation of the council, nursing representation was not addressed. ANI feedback addressed the importance of including nursing representation and the consideration of healthcare consumers and providers within the international community. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor is updating occupations currently active in nursing. ANI has identified experts to define the tasks, abilities, knowledge and work activities of the nurse informaticist. In the upcoming weeks, ANI will submit a response on the American Health Information Community successor. This successor will bring together both public and private, not-for-profit and for-profit entities that represent all health community sectors. These national responses are just one of the examples of how ANI, as a successful collaboration, provides a national mechanism for transforming care and developing resources, guidelines and standards for nursing informatics practice, education, scope of practice, research, certification, public policy, terminology, best practice guidelines, mentoring and advocacy.
