More than 90 percent were x86 servers, said Jean Bozman, research vice president of IDC’s enterprise server group. The x86 servers, defined by IDC as all servers based on Intel or AMD x86 processors, accounted for more than 50 percent of the worldwide server revenue of $58.3 billion. The overall growth for the market was in single digits in 2007, but some segments are growing faster, including the x86 (with 10.3 percent unit growth and 10.6 percent revenue growth from 2006 to 2007) and the blade server segment, with 41 percent revenue growth from 2006 to 2007. In the first quarter of 2008, HP had the leading position, followed by Dell and IBM. High availability, reliability and serviceability are becoming increasingly important in the x86 market, said Bozman, as more demanding workloads continue to move to those servers, and more enterprise workload protection is needed. Ken Cayton, server research manager for IDC, noted the serviceability, manageability and compact environment of virtualization deployed in the blade server segment is driving its growth. VIrTUALIzATION: Taking physical resources on x86 servers and carving them up into smaller pieces using software, or virtual machines (VMs), is increasing rapidly. 2. POwEr dOwN: Vendors are continuing to reduce power and cooling costs by delivering more energy efficiency. 3. EffIcIENcy: Buyers are looking to use data center space more efficiently, driving the need to increase computing density and increasing the focus on x86 servers. At the same time, it provides fully featured e-mail for all of our knowledge workers. We plan to take advantage of its open architecture to undertake additional costcutting techniques such as virtualization. Now that we have begun our deployment, we have found that their product does everything they said it would.” Lesson learned:“The hardest part I can remember was getting SSL certificates put on the Webmail servers. It was actually quite tricky to figure out for someone who is not familiar with Linux.” Clyde Williams, infrastructure systems manager, Southeast Alabama Medical Center “Our mission is to provide comfort and relief from pain to our patients and their families when a cure is not possible. To avoid endangering patient health, HOM needs a robust IT infrastructure with high failover for our headquarters, with all the hardware comprising our data tier, application tier and enduser tier working together flawlessly. The Fujitsu PRIMERGY BX600 servers provide a stable environment that we rely on to connect us to our patient information and to one another in ways that are crucial to the lifeblood of our organization.” Eric Kaplan, director of Information Technologies, Hospice of Michigan 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 SOURCE: IDC WORLDWIDE SERvER FORECAST, Q1 2008 http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=9917 http://HealthcareITNews.com http://HealthcareITNews.com
