The recipients for August are Emma Cartmell and Charles Parker. Ms. Cartmell assumed the role of chair of the Chapter Advocacy Liaison Roundtable in July 2006 and has been active on the CALR for more than three years. The CALR provides networking and educational opportunities for member advocates to promote Chapter advocacy programs at the grassroots level in coordination with the Society’s Advocacy and Public Policy agenda. She has been actively involved in improving training and education for the CALR, and has been committed to helping all Chapter Leaders develop an advocacy plan specific to their particular state. Additionally, Ms. Cartmell worked with the Society’s Government Relations team to develop and plan the CALR off-site training during National Health IT Week. Due to her tireless volunteer efforts, Ms. Cartmell brought many state advocacy representatives to the CALR training and grew the CALR membership exponentially over the last three years. Ms. Cartmell was recently promoted to vice president of healthcare advanced programs at Science Application International Corp. As a nine-year member of HIMSS with more than 18 years of experience in technology, Mr. Parker has shared his expertise through presentations at the Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition and its pre-conference Physician and Pharmacy Symposia, and the first-ever HIMSS Virtual Conference & Expo. Additionally, he is a member of the HIMSS Ambulatory Information Systems Steering Committee and is the chair of HIMSS’ monthly e-newsletter, The Digital Office. With Mr. Parker’s guidance, The Digital Office connects HIMSS members with timely, comprehensive coverage and analysis of the use of electronic medical records in independent physician practices. Through his dedication to ensuring a monthly newsletter is created, he has been able to bring valuable business information right to the clinical practice owner and business manger’s office on the use and implementation of health information technology. Mr. Parker is vice president and chief technology officer for Masspro, the federally designated quality improvement organization for Massachusetts. His primary duties include oversight of the Doctor’s Office QualityInformation Technology (DOQ-IT) project focused on increasing the adoption of electronic health records in Massachusetts along with increasing adoption of computerized physician order entry in acute care settings, and developing healthcare information systems in home health and long-term care facilities. ■ Nominations for the “Spirit of HIMSS” Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration.
