CDWHealthcare.com 888.419.7377 Health Level Seven, a healthcare IT standards development organization, has released its personal health record functionality model. The model describes what the system can do for healthcare consumers and is “the fraternal twin of HL7’s EHR system functional model,” said Donald Mon, co-chairman of the HL7 EHR technical committee and vice president of practice leadership at the American Health Information Management Association. Pairing HL7’s new PHR model with its EHR model provides a framework for standards-based interoperability between the consumer and the provider, Mon said. “While the PHR System Functional Model is general in scope and was developed with an eye towards what is achievable today, it contains the flexibility necessary for product innovation and sets a vision for future PHR systems,” he added. HL7 said the organization formed a PHR workgroup in 2005 in response to “the growing awareness that personal health records are a valuable tool consumers can use to help them make informed healthcare decisions.” According to James Ferguson, lead facilitator of the personal health subgroup of the HL7 PHR workgroup and director of Health IT Strategy and Policy at Kaiser Permanente, the model was developed with input from a broad range of stakeholders, including consumers, providers, health plans, vendors and health information management professionals. “PHRs will enable consumers to play a more active role in their healthcare by allowing individuals the power to integrate and manage their personal healthcare information,” Ferguson said. HL7 has posted a white paper on interoperability that outlines how the term is currently defined and used in actual practice. The paper, “Coming to Terms: Scoping Interoperability for Healthcare” will help those who want to understand interoperability as it plays out in the marketplace. John D. Halamka M.D., chairman of the Health Information Technology Standards Panel, said the paper introduces a framework for the definition of interoperability based on a review of the literature and a survey of existing uses of the term across all industries. “As we improve healthcare through the use of electronic health records, it is our hope that all stakeholders will use this definition to gain a better understanding of the future we are seeking,” he said. n ANN ARBOR, MI – More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: FuNctIoNalItY 1007 ● e ● Connect: cdW 1007 JWT Communications, Entertainment, & Technology 9/12/07 11:12:34 AM http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.CDWHealthcare.com http://www.CDWHealthcare.com http://HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=7823 http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=7886
