Physicians will also have access to eClinicalWorks Electronic Health eXchange, a community health record, and eClinicalWorks Enterprise Business Optimizer, a reporting and financial analysis tool. “We have a good track record and a 98 percent adoption rate,” said Navani. “We have over 20,000 physicians using our solution now. I am confident that El Camino will have Girish Navani the same success.” AHRQ puts focus on decision tools By Molly MerrIll, Associate Editor wASHINGTON – The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality will fund a federal project to develop, implement and evaluate four computer-based decision-support tools to help clinicians and patients use genetic tests to evaluate and treat breast cancer. The $1 million project will be completed by RTI International, an independent, non-profit research institute in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and is expected to take about 16 months. The first pair of tools will assess whether a woman with a family history of cancer should be tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, which may help determine her chances of developing certain kinds of cancer, especially breast cancer. The Patient BRCA tool will be designed for use by patients and the Integrated BRCA tool will be designed for use by primary care providers. The second pair of tools, for women already diagnosed with breast cancer, will help determine which patients are appropriate for a Gene Expression Profiling (GEP) test. GEP test results can help evaluate which patients are at a high risk of can- cer recurrence and therefore are good candidates for chemotherapy, in addition to other appropriate treatments. The provider-only GEP Tool will provide passive decision support to the clinician, while the shared decision-making tool will provide active decision support to the patient and clinician. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: CDS 1008 ● “We have a good track record and a 98 percent adoption rate.” – Girish Navani So far, Madison says 80 independent physicians have committed to the initiative. “We are not forcing anyone to implement this technology. This is all voluntary so the physicians are all very receptive to the idea and committed to doing it,” Madison said. The first practice, Manoukian Medical Group, John O’Keefe a practice made up of two physicians, is set to go live at the end of September. New Jersey-based ITelagen will provide El Camino with IT and EMR support. ITelagen is also supporting an EMR implementation for the Walnut Creek, Calif.-based Muir Medical Group IPA. John O’Keefe, ITelagen’s CEO, points out that to link 100 physicians really means support for 300-400 computers. “With three or more physicians it becomes more painful,” he said. According to O’Keefe, EMR implementation usually consists of four components: implementation and configuration, hosting, phone configuration and equipment. What ITelagen does is manage all of these components Ute Burness, CEO of the Muir Medical Group IPA, is in phase two of her group’s initiative to link 200 physicians by 2010. Currently, about 60 physicians in 24 locations have an EMR. “Each terminal is assigned a number. They (ITelagen) have a designated team that just works on my project. They know about my medical group,” Burness says. ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: CaMINo 1008 Think big. Work Lean. Advanced IT capabilities are within reach.
