The problem, they say, is that emergency department staff are hesitant to adopt new technology, preferring triedand-true methods in an environment where the slightest delay or mistake could be fatal. Hansen points out that T- An agreement to deliver a cardiology data solution announced Oct. 24 and a recent contract to deliver radiology IT systems to Scotland are key steps for a vendor looking to outgrow its perception as a U.S.-based imaging firm. While it will always be known as the former healthcare imaging division of Eastman Kodak, Carestream Health would like to VIENNA, AUSTRIA – be seen as a comprehensive healthcare IT firm in the E.U. market. “It will be a big focus for us in 2008 to continue to accelerate our visibility outside of radiology,” said Graeme Allan, regional manager of healthcare information solutions for Carestream in Europe, Africa and the Middle East region. He added that the company is interested in “services, solutions and programmes that are driven by the IT professional, not just the radiology professional.” Carestream announced at the World of Health IT conference in Vienna that it will offer a web-based cardiology information system from Sclmage Inc. The system will be integrated with Carestream’s information management solutions. In August, Carestream announced a contract to deliver its picture archiving and communications sys- tem (PACS) within NHS Scotland’s Lothian Health Board. The deal is part of Kodak’s larger contract to deliver Carestream PACS to 39 hospitals in Scotland by 2008. “We’re now implementing (radiology information systems) in all the facilities as well,” said Allan. “It’s a major project over the next two to three years.” ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: euroPe 1107 ● “In an emergency department, if the software and the hardware gets there, It NEEdS to BE MoBILE ENough FoR cLINIcIaNS to uSE It IN REaL-tIME.” – Tom Ward System began roughly 11 years ago as a provider of paper-based services and has gradually shifted its offerings to an electronic medium. In doing so, the company has also focused on making its products more mobile. “Efficiency is tied to mobility,” says Ward. “In an emergency department, if the software and the hardware gets there, it needs to be mobile enough for clinicians to be able to use it in real time.” With T-SystemEV 2.6, ED staff can place orders for lab, radiology, medications, consults, ancillary services and other treatments from the bedside. They can also enter or import medication and allergy information, improve revenue capture through E&M level determination and identify bottlenecks through critical flow metrics. “It’s amazing how much time clinicians are forced to be at the computer,” says Ward. “What we’re trying to do is bring that computer to the bedside … and make it easier for them.” T-SystemEV 2.6 was installed in seven sites following beta testing. One of those sites was Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Wash. “We are very pleased that EV 2.6 lets us streamline patient management,” said John Matheson, MD, Kadlec’s emergency department medical director, in a press release. “It was essential for us to enhance how orders were placed and data was retrieved for both drugs and allergies so we could aim for high standards of patient safety and care.” ■ More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: eDiS 1107 Taking care of the little things makes all the difference.
