Group Health is a consumer-governed nonprofit healthcare system that provides health plan coverage to 580,000 residents in Washington and north Idaho as well as clinical care at 25 outpatient centers and one hospital. It has contracts with 39 other hospitals. In 2000, its MyGroupHealth looked like standard static “brochure ware,” as Moran called it. Year by year, the program has become more interactive, providing not just e-mail services between doctor and patient but also prescription renewals, lab results and requests for appointments Group Health had to bring along its 900 physicians, some of whom were resistant to change – including one who e-mailed Moran to say, “I’m never going to practice this way.” ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: MoDeL 1108 Kaiser rolls out EHR to 22 hospitals SAN fRANCISCO – Kaiser record improves quality, service and patient safePermanente has completed its rollout of electy, demonstrating how tronic health records to health information technology reshapes and aug22 hospitals, serving 4.8 million members. The system has been in play for three years, developed with Redlands, Calif.-based ESRI, and paid for in part with a $500,000 Department of Defense grant. Though there have been no formal studies to measure return on investment, Stephen Corbett, MD, chief medical informatics officer at Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center, says he sees value in the efficiencies derived from the system day to day and also during disasters. “What works best in a disaster is what works best on a day-to-day basis,” Corbett said. “In Southern California, we have miniature disasters all the time. We’re always in and out of disaster mode.” “In many cases, (AEGIS) reduces response and transport time from a half-hour or more to just minutes at a time when minutes mean lives saved,” said Ruthita Fike, CEO of Loma Linda University Medical Center. ESRI, a billion-dollar company, which plays big in the government and transportation markets, has been in the healthcare marketplace for 10 years, says Bill Davenhall, the company’s global health solutions manager. He views the healthcare space as still emerging for ESRI. “We won’t have to explain 10 years from now what this technology is,” he said. Loma Linda is one of the few hospitals in the country using GIS technology. Other projects have more to do with internal operations, he said, or to assist in pinpointing the location of certain types of diseases in the community, he said. At Loma Linda, Corbett envisions a couple of ways to change AEGIS – expand the number of users and make the system interactive. Take it out to the field via cell phones. “Cell phones, which are ubiquitous, will make the tool even more valuable,” he said. “AEGIS is not just for somebody in an emergency dispatch center,” he said. “It’s for the fireman on the scene with a cell phone in his pocket.” ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: GIS 1108 l e l Connect: CDW 1108 http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=10298 http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=10293 http://www.CDWHealthcare.com http://www.CDWHealthcare.com http://www.CDW.com http://www.HealthcareITNews.com http://www.healthcareitnews.com/story.cms?id=10295 http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=10318
