In the past, when a patient was transferred for care at Denver Health, say after a skiing accident, the sending facility would send a disc of radiographic studies, copies of films and/or copies of reports, Doyle said. “This was time consuming, delayed transfer, could be lost in transfer and potentially could not be viewed by our PACS software. The patient had to sit and wait.” Often the wait was 1520 minutes. Today the information and images are transferred from one PACS system to another, made possible with new technology developed by Emageon. The initial rollout was to nine referring hospitals, with more to come. Emageon built the Emageon Outside Study Gateway, which enables the direct DICOM transmission of PACS images to Denver Health’s Emageon’s Gateway server. “Emageon believes it has identified and solved a major challenge that large medical centers and teaching hospitals face when considering how to bring in outside studies to their PACS and still maintain patient data integrity,” said Allen Scales, Emageon’s senior vice president, product management. “I think this will improve quality of care, will expedite care upon arrival of the patient to our institution, will decrease cost and inefficiency in terms of necessity for repeat of films when CDs are lost or not sent,” said Trauma Program Manager Debra Carpenter. ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: DeNver 1108 WAShINGTON – The Leapfrog systems, according Group has warned that incorrect to Leapfrog. deployment of CPOE systems could Leapfrog recentlead to serious medication errors. ly developed its “As CPOE systems are imple- CPOE Evaluation mented at the clinical level in hos- Tool as a complepitals, we’re seeing a broad vari- ment to its annual ance in both the degree of adoption national hospital Leah Binder and in the quality of outcomes,” survey, which identifies the top perLeapfrog CEO Leah Binder said. forming hospitals across the country. 5085_3_STSFinal:Layout 1 10/9/08 10:38 AM Page 1 Less than 10 percent of U.S. hospi- More at HealthcareITnews.com tals have fully implemented CPOE lConnect: LeaPfroG 1108 e Do CPOE right, says Leapfrog Group denver Continued from page 1 The change, begun in August, has been a boon for Denver Health’s trauma outreach program and for the emergency patients sent to Denver Health from other hospitals. “We have already seen multiple cases where images were being viewed by Denver Health physicians before the patient even arrived at our emergency department,” said Vince Doyle, imaging informatics manager for Denver Health. One such technology is called OptiVox, developed by Knoxville, Tenn.-based The White Stone Group. OptiVox makes it possible for caregivers to enter and receive shift reports by telephone and computer at any time during their shifts. Michelle Godin, a nurse and director of patient care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn., says the technology reduced the hand-off time by about 25 percent, and boosted the quality of information. “You are really focused on the issues at hand,” she said, “At least I’m not wasting my time searching people down. I can get out on time.” The caregiver dials into the secure system to provide an update on each patient. The patient information appears on a computer screen in real time. At Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, Ill, Judi Bonomi, a nurse and director of inpatient nursing, says face-to-face shift change handoffs can take 45 minutes to an hour, time better spent seeing patients, she said. “It is a ritual,” Bonomi says. “It’s something nurses hold very tightly onto,” she said. “Our biggest competition is still the old way,” said Scott Overholt, chief marketing officer for The White Stone Group. The report over the phone is more targeted than face-to-face handoff, said Wrenae Shabel, a nurse and vice president and chief clinical officer at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Md. ■ More at HealthcareITnews.com e Connect: HaNDoffS 1108 www.capsts.org snomedsolutions@cap.org 800-323-4040 ext. 7700 l http://OnBase.com/Healthcare http://OnBase.com/Healthcare http://www.healthcareitnews.com/eConnect.cms?id=10319
