Our first-ever NewsMaker poll asked 293 respondents to name the person who would likely make the biggest waves, have the most influence, be the most effective on the healthcare IT front in the next year. There were no prompts, and the open-ended question got an amazingly diverse range of answers. Microsoft founder Bill Gates got three votes, and Microsoft itself garnered one, too, as did other entities rather than people. Microsoft HealthVault, launched in the fourth quarter of 2007, was most frequently named the top technology to watch in 2008 by our readers. The technology platform will allow consumers to collect and control their private health information and companies to develop compatible tools and services. Although Ron Eyer of Grand View Health System said that he doubts whether “diverse areas of confidentiality/privacy can marry with open access,” others laud the technology. “HealthVault is the ‘only’ HIT platform that adheres to the 2007 principles of the bipartisan Coalition for Patient Privacy that ensure Americans control all access to their PHI,” said Deborah Peel, MD, founder of the Patient Privacy Rights. “No other vendor is stating publicly up front exactly what privacy principles will be met or being audited on whether their system actually does what is promised,” she said. “HealthVault is adhering to the toughest privacy principles in the U.S.” Microsoft’s Azyxxi was another frequently named technology. The 2006 acquisition has proven to be a smart move. In May, Johns Hopkins announced it would deploy Azyxxi’s platform and applications to improve patient care and develop performance metrics. Services-oriented architecture, or SOA, was another reader favorite. The top two hospital system implementations announced or begun in 2007 that readers voted as having the greatest impact on healthcare IT are SOA projects. Partners HealthCare System’s SOA platform, developed by Siemens Medical Solutions, is expected to enhance interoperability and enable repurposing of software components to create new IT-based services. UPMC’s SOA platform will integrate data from disparate IT systems across the network’s hospitals and ambulatory care sites, and allow health information exchange with other western Pennsylvania healthcare providers. Garnering a few votes were computerized physician order entry, secure wireless, radio frequency identification, business intelligence, telemedicine, portals for comparison shopping of medical services, medical banking, blade technologies and enterprise master patient index.
