However, there seems little question that it would improve health system performance and could potentially lower overall costs, depending on how well it is managed. “ - Karen Davis, president Commonwealth Fund “Health information privacy protection must follow personal health information, or PHI, no matter where it resides. Uniform, universal protections for PHI should apply across all jurisdictions.” - Byron Pickard, AHIMA president “We believe that predictive informatics will transform healthcare.” - Gary Kennedy, chairman and CEO, RemedyMD “Before embarking on any solution, the government needs to have more information about healthcare to know what is working and what is not working.” - Donna Shalala, former HHS secretary More at HealthcareITNews.com e Connect: quoteS 1207 The chart above shows how the William Blair Health Care IT Index (WBHCIT), comprising 31 healthcare IT stocks, compared with the Nasdaq Index between throughout the year. We were right. Board members came up with some familiar names – and also some not so familiar, but just as intriguing and full of possibilities for healthcare information technology. John Glaser, senior vice president and CIO of Partners HealthCare System in Boston says he will be watching Darren Dworkin, CIO at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. “He’s going to be a great CIO,” Glaser said. Dworkin joined Cedars Sinai in January 2006 after a five-year stint as chief technology office at Boston Medical Center. Cedars Sinai is one of the largest nonprofit hospitals in the Western United States and considered one of the most wired in the country. William Spooner, senior vice president and CIO of Sharp Healthcare in San Diego will keep an eye on David Brailer, MD. Brailer, the nation’s first healthcare IT czar stepped down after two years to form Health Evolution Partners, an investment firm focused on healthcare IT. “They have $700 million from CalPERS, Spooner said. “It will be interesting to see where they place their bets.” Paul Tang, CMIO at Palo Alto Medical Foundation in California, says Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt will continue to exert influence on healthcare information technology. “Never before has the country had a secretary of HHS that has paid more attention to informatics and understood the enabling role it plays in making healthcare more accessible, safer, more evidence-based and more value-driven than Secretary Leavitt has.” Tang said. “The initiatives he has put into motion to change the availability of health information for patient care, public health, and clinical research have been among the most significant national policies dealing with health information in a decade.” Mike McCurry, vice president and CIO at Sisters of Mercy Health System in St. Louis, has Denni McColm’s attention. McColm is CIO of Citizens Memorial Healthcare in nearby Bolivar, Mo. McCurry is leading Mercy’s Genesis Project. Neupert is setting the direction for developing applications and solutions for the clinical and business sides of healthcare. Last October, it was Neupert who explained why Microsoft’s new software and services platform called HealthVault would change healthcare. Democratic presidential candidate frontrunner Hillary Clinton, of course, is associated with healthcare reform – and, she says, IT needs to be at the core. Others making the cut with Healthcare IT News readers as worthy to keep an eye on in 2008 include: National Health Information Technology Coordinator Robert Kolodner, Health Evolution Partners founder and CEO David J. Brailer, Linda Kloss, CEO of AHIMA, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Partners HealthCare CIO John Glaser, Brent James MD, Intermountain Healthcare, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, John Halamka, MD, CIO for CareGroup Health System and Harvard Medical School, Allscripts CEO Glen Tullman and athenahealth CEO Jonathan Bush, Cerner CEO Neal Patterson, Paradigm HealthCare’s Tom Hagan and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina’s David Boucher.
