Impact of Technology on the Competitiveness and Financial Health of Hospitals Summary: It has been suggested that strategic investments in clinical information systems will likely influence a hospital's long-term competitive position in its community. More than half of respondents indicated that electronic medical records could have the most impact on improving a hospital's competitive position in its community. N AN ELECTION HELD FROM Oct. 15 through Nov. 15, four members were selected to the HIMSS Board of Directors. David S. Finn; Holly D. Miller, MD, MBA, FHIMSS; Carol R. Selvey, MHSA, FHIMSS; and Charlene S. Underwood, MBA, FHIMSS, will serve threeyear terms beginning in July 2008. David S. Finn is VP and CIO/privacy and information security officer at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. A HIMSS member since 1999, Mr. Finn has served as a presenter at conferences sponsored by the HIMSS South Central Texas Chapter, in addition to authoring a poster presentation at the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition. In his role on the board, Mr. Finn hopes to use his experiences working in the healthcare IT industry to help drive the convergence of biomedical technology with clinical systems and the electronic medical record. In addition, he would like to assist HIMSS in expanding the Society's work with non-technical associations and organizations to develop best-practice approaches to policy, procedure and technology, inclusive of all clinical and business functions. Holly D. Miller, MD, MBA, FHIMSS, is the VP and CMIO at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Miller, a HIMSS member since 1999, is chair of the PHR Steering Committee. In addition, she is one of the leaders of the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Community. She previously served on the HIMSS RHIO Task Force, and has served as a Views from the Top speaker at the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition and a speaker during the HIMSS Virtual Conference. Dr. Miller notes she is passionate about healthcare transformation using HIT as the catalyst. Starting Jan. 1, 2008, HIMSS opens its annual call for volunteers willing to serve on a committee for the 2008-09 fiscal year. An electronic application, available at www.himss.org/committees, will be open from Jan. 1, 2008 through March 7, 2008. Committee participation is open to all individuals and corporate HIMSS members who are not serving in other leadership positions within the Society and have been a member for at least the past 12 consecutive months. HIMSS has a number of committees seeking new volunteers, ranging from settings such as ambulatory and enterprise and topics such as privacy & security, personal health records, advocacy and public policy, patient safety & quality ERVICE ON A HIMSS COMMITTEE outcomes and healthcare information exchange to constituencies such as nursing informatics, the Physicians' Committee, the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) Technical Committee, and the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group (MSHUG) Advisory Committee. These groups work throughout the year delivering tangible resources of direct benefit to HIMSS members. A committee appointment is also an excellent step toward a growing leadership role in HIMSS.
