Healthcare IT News - December 2007 - (Page 28) 28 Healthcare IT News ■ December 2007 www.HealthcareITNews.com Spirit of HIMSS Award Recipients Address Interests of Pediatric HIT Professionals, SIG Members and Emergency Responders SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER Dexter D'Costa, MHA, CHPHIMS, the recipient of the September “Spirit of HIMSS” Award, was the driving force and key contributor of establishing and engaging the HIMSS Pediatric Health Informatics and Technology (PHIT) Special Interest Group (SIG). As co-chair of the PHIT SIG, Mr. D'Costa was instrumental in developing the PHIT SIG's SharePoint Portal and will soon be publishing the PHIT SIG's first quarterly newsletter, PHIT eNEWS. With his involvement, the PHIT SIG is now 70-plus members strong and growing. In addition, Mr. D'Costa serves as the student/scholarship liaison for the HIMSS Midwest Gateway Chapter of St. Louis. He has been actively involved in increasing student membership in the Midwest Gateway Chapter and providing networking opportunities to students pursuing a career in health informatics. Mr. D'Costa is a patient care information systems specialist at St. Louis Children's Hospital. His areas of expertise include the application of business intelligence in healthcare-using query analysis and reporting tools for electronic documentation monitoring, revenue capture and research purposes. Mr. D'Costa completed his medical degree SPIRIT OF HIMSS AWARD (MBBS-Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery) from Goa Medical College (India) in 2000. He practiced as a primary care physician in a community hospital before moving to the United States to obtain his master's in health administration (MHA) from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2005. Howard Brown, a recipient of the October “Spirit of HIMSS” Award, is an active member of the Project Management SIG, where he provides tremendous support to the SIG Chair and resides on their internal Leadership Committee. His efforts have greatly improved resources for HIMSS members involved in the SIG community. A project management analyst for Baptist Healthcare, Mr. Brown has been involved with HIMSS since 2004. This year, he created a “Project Management SIG Membership Guide” and a “Quick Reference Guide” to assist SIG members in not only joining the SIG, but also in learning how to access and navigate through the Project Management SIG Portal site. These user-friendly, detailoriented documents have now become the baseline resource documentation for all SIG portal sites throughout HIMSS. His development of the Project Management SIG SharePoint portal has evolved into a viable resource for all SIG members. HIMSS often refers new SIG Chairs to this site as an example of how to further develop their groups' portal sites. In addition, Mr. Brown suggested the "Join a SIG Today" button be added to each SIG Web page on the HIMSS Web site; this suggestion has since been implemented. These additional resources increase member activity and involvement in SIGs, as well as in all HIMSS communities. SIG members have greatly benefited as a result of Mr. Brown's expertise, hard work and dedication. A recipient of the October 2007 “Spirit of HIMSS” Award, Erik Pupo was pivotal in the success of HIMSS 1st Responder HIT Work Group, which was launched on Oct. 31, 2006. As chair, he drove the group's completion of a 50-page white paper, posted to the Web this past May. The work group was approved to become the Emergency Responder Task Force for FY08, as HIMSS continues to grow its involvement in bridging the gap between HIT and emergency response. Mr. Pupo has also spent numerous hours volunteering for the HITSP Technical Committee, providing input and guidance for the Emergency Response-Electronic Health Record use case. In addition, he chaired a new work group, a result of the collaboration between HIMSS and Internet2 between 2006 and 2007. Under his leadership and direction, this work group produced a white paper, Federated Identity Management Business Tool Kit, released this past July. As a senior enterprise architect at Vangent, Mr. Pupo is responsible for providing expertise and advisement to many of Vangent's healthcare clients whose business base includes federal health agencies and the commercial healthcare market (including health insurance, pharmaceuticals and healthcare providers), as well as state and local governments, both domestic and international. He currently works at the US Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC, where he is responsible for the development and execution of HHS's enterprise, data and security architecture approach. Nominations for the “Spirit of HIMSS” Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration. Nominations should be submitted to HIMSS Member Services Manager Jessica Bird at jbird@himss.org, and should include a brief description explaining the accomplishments of the member and how he or she earns the recognition of the “Spirit of HIMSS.” Recipients will be selected and announced in the HIMSS Insider and HIMSS Weekly Insider. One annual honoree is selected from the recipients each year. ■ HIMSS08 Anchor Exhibitors T he HIMSS Insider is featuring profiles of the anchor exhibitors who will be demonstrating their cuttingedge healthcare IT products and innovative emerging technologies at the 2008 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, Feb. 24-28 in Orlando, Fla.
