Healthcare IT News - December 2008 - (Page 30) 30 The HIMSS Insider s December 2008 www.himss.org King supports state's health IT efforts, expands local chapter's outreach Cynthia King, RN, BSN, MSCIT, CPHIMS, OCTOBER SPIRIT OF HIMSS AWARD recently helped organize an outstanding social program for the Colorado Chapter of HIMSS (CHIMSS). The event attracted more than double the participants CHIMSS social programs typically bring in and attendee evaluations were extremely positive. Ms. King, a CHIMSS board member-atlarge since 2005 and the first RHIO liaison chair for the Chapter, acquired a great speaker for the event, Colorado State CIO Mike Locatis. Mr. Locatis spoke on the governor's role in the Office of Information Technology, which oversees state technology initiatives, recommends strategies and maximizes service efficiencies through applying enterprise technology solutions. Additionally, Ms. King has been instrumental in increasing student participation in CHIMSS by creating discounted student program fees and the academic liaison position on the board. Ms. King, a quality improvement advisor for CFMC, the official medical quality improvement organization for Colorado, is active in multiple health IT and health information exchange initiatives throughout the state. She teaches in the healthcare informatics graduate program at Regis University in Denver and has worked as a registered nurse for more than 31 years, 24 of those years in Colorado. By continuously striving to develop benefits for CHIMSS members through special programs and initiatives, Ms. King genuinely represents the “Spirit of HIMSS.” Nominations for the Spirit of HIMSS Award are submitted to the Membership Committee for consideration. Nominations should be submitted to HIMSS Member Services Program Manager Jessica Bird at jbird@himss.org, and should include a brief description explaining the accomplishments of the member and how he or she earns the recognition of the Spirit of HIMSS. Recipients will be selected and announced in the HIMSS Insider and HIMSS Weekly Insider. s Interoperability Showcase Returns to HIMSS09 I nteroperability Showcases are live interactive forums held in conjunction with HIMSS' conferences worldwide. These showcases feature leading-edge technology and healthcare standards creating an interactive environment where attendees can experience health information exchange handson with live real-time data. Showcases feature IHE's (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise's) common framework and Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) Interoperability Specifications for enabling interoperability across local, regional and national health information exchanges. The Interoperability Showcase will be making a return appearance to the 2009 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, April 4-8. More than 2,800 attendees visited the Interoperability Showcase at HIMSS08 in Orlando that featured clinical scenarios with enhanced privacy and security enabled by the standards-based IHE framework. More than 50 vendors and 74 clinical information systems were part of a secured health information exchange that supports a patient-centric clinical workflow. Building on last year's success, the 2009 Interoperability Showcase will feature cuttingedge technology and standards in an interactive environment using clinical scenarios that simulate how health information is seamlessly passed among care providers. Clinical scenarios will focus on clinician and patient access and information sharing across the full continuum of care. Another exciting 2009 special feature includes several high-profile U.S. federal and state agency initiatives showcasing the progress they have made toward cross-system health information exchange. The showcase is the place to see the ultimate reality show demonstrating interoperability in action, to illustrate the benefits of managing personal healthcare. The interactive demonstration will show how interoperability can improve the patient care process and link vital health information to give clinical care givers the right information to provide optimal patient care. The showcase also features multiple theaters that deliver education sessions, success stories and information on the national initiatives surrounding interoperability. The 2009 Interoperability Showcase will continue to show the evolution of interoperability in health information exchanges.
