The EHR's range of solutions meets the needs of the different facilities and levels of service within the system, as well as supports CIHA's need for technology solutions that can be easily extendable to other tribes and rural communities. For instance, Snowbird, NC, approximately 7-miles from CIH, is connected to the Vista imaging system, allowing digital radiology images and retinal pictures from the diabetes clinic to be shared over the network. such as patient information, clinical status, signs and symptoms, contact tracing, risk factors and case classification. CDS staffers manage the CDRSS help desk phone line and email account, as well as develop training materials and deliver training sessions. Enhancements are continually developed, based on users' suggestions. CDS believes streamlined and efficient communication among all CDRSS stakeholders has contributed significantly to the system's success. The recipients of the 2008 Davies Award in the organizational category will be profiled in next month's HIMSS Insider. Sharing inspiring and strategic by CHIME and HIMSS T Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA), Cherokee, NC Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority is the primary public health provider for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a population with more than 10,000 members. CIHA is the governing body for Cherokee Indian Hospital (CIH); hospital services include a 25-bed inpatient unit, emergency room, outpatient department, physical therapy, pharmacy, social services and a dental clinic. The hospital's outpatient department sees an average of 1,800 patients per month. In 1986, CIH was the first Indian Health Service facility in the country to implement the Resource Patient Management System (RPMS), a computerized medical record. In 2004, CIH successfully tested and implemented an RPMS EHR graphical user interface. The EHR-enhanced system enables CIH to utilize and maintain clinical and administrative data collected since 1986. Combining the database capabilities of the RPMS with a GUI, the EHR offers easy access to patient information; users can “point and click” to obtain data, rather than log in and out of separate RPMS applications. EHR functions include management of patient lists; provider order entry for labs and medications; report retrieval; clinical encounter and patient education documentation and clinical decision support. These partners based in New Jersey's 114 local health departments covering 566 municipalities in 21 counties work to protect the health of the state's more than 8 million residents. They monitor the incidence and prevalence of communicable and infectious diseases, develop recommendations regarding prevention and control and communicate those recommendations to all public health partners. CDS' electronic Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System (CDRSS) was implemented to improve the timeliness and quality of disease reporting and minimize underreporting. System highlights include capture of influenza-like illness data from schools, hospitals and long-term care facilities; antimicrobial resistance reporting; disease mapping; epidemiologic and administrative activity reports; and screens for data entry, Coming Next Month: Call for 2009 Applications Opens The Call for Applications for the 2009 Davies Award opens the second week of January.
