u.s. MoTor vehICle sales Due to a number of factors including an unsteady economy and a dramatic rise in gasoline prices, the total number of U.S. vehicle sales declined in 2008 by 18.0 percent to 13.6 million vehicles, the lowest levels seen in the last ten years. Total new light vehicle sales (13.2 million vehicles) dropped 18.0 percent from 2007 while passenger car sales (7.0 million vehicles) declined 10.7 percent and light truck sales (6.2 million vehicles) declined 25.0 percent. Combined sales of medium and heavy duty trucks fell in 2008 to 323,396 units (down 19.0 percent from 2007). Sales in the medium duty truck segment fell by 20.8 percent for the year while heavy duty truck sales decreased by 17.6 percent. Light vehicle leases fell to 3.0 million vehicles in 2008, representing 7.0 percent of total light vehicle. Used vehicle sales continue to encompass the majority of the light vehicle market, accounting for more than two-thirds of all light vehicle sales (69.4 percent). u.s.
