ToP 10 lIghT vehICle sales In 2008, the overall number of light vehicle sales declined by 18.0 percent to 13.2 million vehicles. The market share of passenger car sales grew to 53.2 percent while the market share of light trucks fell to 46.8 percent. In 2008, the top 10 passenger cars comprised 39.1 percent of the total passenger car market (up from 36.1 percent in 2007), while the top 10 light trucks comprised 37.1 percent of the total light truck market (up slightly from 36.0 percent in 2007). While the top five passenger cars were foreign nameplates (Toyota, Honda and Nissan), the top three light trucks were well-known domestic nameplates (Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge).
