Hosted by repair shops, parts stores, jobbers and WDs, these events are extremely popular with consumers and are a source of valuable data for the Car Care Council. As technicians and auto shop students inspect each vehicle, they note fluids, parts and components that need replacing and maintenance that needs to be performed on special inspection forms. The results are shared with the consumer on the spot and a copy is sent back to the council. The information gathered is tabulated and analyzed, providing a snapshot of the condition of vehicles on the road. While the data might not be considered statistically significant, it does offer a “barometer” of how well or how poorly vehicle owners are caring for their vehicle. This data has been gathered since 1997 and for the first time is presented in this Insider. The overall vehicle failure rate is determined by the percentage of vehicles inspected which had one or more problems that needed attention. Of special note are the charts on page 11, which show counter-intuitive trends whereby consumers took better care of their vehicles (lower failure rates) prior to and during economic downturns, then worse care after the economy improved.
