ahePa FaMily chaPter News Scholarship to $50,000. In addition to the district scholarship, he has also established a chapter scholarship. Brother Langadas has been an active Ahepan for 16 years. He is a former 1996 Olympic Torchbearer, carrying the torch through Boca Raton while on its journey to Atlanta. as Greek American citizens throughout Bergen County. Several proclamations were presented and the Greek Flag was raised on March 25, 2009. Chapters that participated included: Ramapo 453, Wyckoff; Alexander Hamilton 54, Paramus; and The Bergen Knights Chapter 285, Tenafly; as well as the District 5 Lodge. Members of the Daughters of Penelope were also present. District 1 AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter 1, Atlanta — The chapter’s Educational Fund, Inc. selected 43 recipients for 2009 scholarships totaling $40,050. The presentations were made during a luncheon and awards ceremony held May 31 commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the foundation. The program also included keynote speaker Dr. Bobby Macris, retired assistant principal, North View High School. Dr. Macris presented an inspiring talk on the importance of pursuing an education. Foundation Chairman Tom Kantsios welcomed the recipients and their families. AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter 1 Educational Fund, AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter 1, Ahepa Prometheus Chapter 519 and the Daughters of Penelope Chapter 53 hosted the event, which was chaired by Dr. Victor Polizos. Board of Directors members George Skoufis, Athena Economy, and Karen Stamatiades made presentations. Also, two scholarships were presented in memory of AHEPA Family Members George Sarris and Violet Skundale Petrakos. With this year’s awards, the AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter 1 Educational Fund Inc. has awarded more than 431 scholarships for $368,750. James S. Scofield Chapter 15, St. Petersburg, Fla. — On October 7, 2008, the chapter voted unanimously to change its name from Sunshine to James S. Scofield Chapter 15. Brother Scofield served as Supreme President of AHEPA and the Sons of Pericles. Today, he remains an active Ahepan and continues to work hard on the chapter’s behalf. An official dedication took place on December 6, 2008. More than 30 Brothers signed a petition to start the process. District 13 Blue Ribbon District 13 — The district’s scholarship foundation awarded 27 scholarships to graduating high school seniors at an awards dinner held May 14, 2009, Addison, Ill. More than 200 persons attended the event. Past Supreme President Steve A. Manta, president of the foundation, announced the recipients, who were all residents of Illinois and Wisconsin. District 16 Alexander the Great Chapter 29, Houston — Supreme Treasurer Anthony D. Kouzounis and Past Supreme Treasurer James G. Petheriotis share a moment with American Ambassador to Greece Daniel V. Speckhard and Dr. Anne Speckhard at the ambassador’s residence during Fourth of July celebrations. It was a highlight of the Athens Supreme Convention for the two Ahepans, who represented the chapter. District 5 District 2 Citrus District 2 Scholarship Foundation, Florida — In March, Brother Angelo Langadas, Boca Raton Chapter No. 487, donated $25,000 to the district’s scholarship fund, doubling the total principal of the Angelo Langadas John G. Thevos District 5 — Ahepans from three Bergen County, N.J. chapters gathered at the Bergen County Administration Building in Hackensack, N.J. to commemorate the 188th anniversary of Greek Independence Day.
