AHEPA Honors Community Excellence in New England

n 2009 – 2010, AHEPA embarked on a series of National Regional Salute banquets that replaced the traditional Biennial Salute Banquet held in Washington every two years. The regional salute banquets held in New York, Portland, Ore., and Chicago, received positive feedback, were well-attended, and overall, were deemed successes. “Our goal was to invigorate the grassroots of the American Hellenic community, and I am confident we achieved that goal,” said Supreme President Nicholas A. Karacostas. “We also aimed to provide the proper national stage to recognize excellence performed in our hometowns and local communities, and we accomplished this goal too. Therefore, we decided to continue with the National Regional Salute

banquets this administrative year based upon our success.” The first regional gala of 2010-2011, the National Northeast Regional Salute Banquet, was held November 20, 2010, in New Haven, Conn. The honorees for the evening included: • Mr. George D. Behrakis, AHEPA Archbishop Iakovos Humanitarian Award • The Honorable Rosa DeLauro, U.S. Representative, AHEPA Meritorious Public Service Award • Judge Socrates H. Mihalakos, Academy of Achievement Award in Law • Dr. John Elefteriades, Academy of Achievement Award in Medicine
