AHepA FAmily CHApter news high school seniors. In addition, the chapter contributed to Cooley’s anemia research. The chapter also hosted its annual commemorations of Greek Independence Day and OXI Day at the statue of Ypsilanti. This rigorous activity schedule could not have been possible without the participation of the evergrowing number of Brothers of the chapter. The membership grew from 47 to 57 paid members during the year. 2011 should be another great year as there are many annual and new events planned. District 12 AHEPA Chapter 78, Merrillville, Ind.—Through its “AHEPA Cares’ program, an offshoot of the “United We Serve” initiative, the chapter donated $1,500 to the local Meals on Wheels Program. In addition, more than 20 Ahepans volunteered to deliver meals on one afternoon. Meals on Wheels representatives Tula Gogolak, community relations director; Sandra Noe, executive director, and Stepanie Barton, volunteer manager were present for the donation presentation. Pictured are Ahepan volunteers Peter Murdakes, Sam Benjamin, Bill Mehas, Andrew Kyres, Louis Bravos Nick Gianikos, and Nick Tournis. “After delivering meals for just one afternoon, we realized the impact of our dollar; but more importantly the impact a volunteer makes in the lives of so many,” said Brother Nick Gianikos. District 20 AHEPA Chapter 342, Long Beach, Calif.— Last year the Republic of Korea unveiled a Korean War memorial in Glendale, Calif. and invited all the nations that had sent troops to Korea to participate and send representatives to the unveiling. At the request of the Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles, Brother George Achedafty a disabled Korean War veteran and past commander of American Legion Post 285, Los Angeles, represented Greece at the ceremony and received the Medal of Freedom from the ambassador of the Republic of Korea in the United States. Brother Achedafty served in the United States Army during the Korean War and in 1952 was attached to the Greek battalion. He is an AHEPA Life Member, a past supreme governor, past District 20 governor, and past chapter president of Chapters 373, Pasadena; 460, Covina; and 342, Long Beach. District 11 Lincoln Chapter 89, Youngstown, Ohio– The chapter held a dinner dance to raise funds for Cooley’s Anemia research on January 15, 2011. At the dinner, several members were honored, including: Brother Theodore Denney, for his participation as part of the AHEPA team in the 2,500th anniversary Athens Marathon; and the chapter’s 50-year Life Members: Brothers Theodore Manolukas, Dr. Gus Mavrigian, Past Supreme President Cleo Zambetis, and Jack Magoulakis. Buckeye District 11 Governor Socrates Kolitsos, Lincoln 89 President James Denney, and Master of Ceremonies Brother Jonathan Conrad all participated. Also honored, but unable to attend, was 50-year member Brother Harry Michelakis Meshel. Each honoree is holding a copy of “The First Victory,” which was presented to them in recognition of their promotion of Hellenism. The net proceeds of the event, more than $1,000, will be sent to the AHEPA Cooley’s Anemia Foundation. District 14 Chapter 191, Sioux City, Iowa—The chapter received a visit from District 14 Governor Alex Livadaros for its installation of chapter officers. Brother Livadaros dubbed the chapter as being “the heart and soul of AHEPA” given its modest size yet invaluable contributions to the community. www.ahepa.org March 2011 the ahepan 15 http://www.ahepa.org
