The Periclean—The Voice of the Sons of Pericles SOP Strives to Reach Its Goals By Michael Michalopulos, SOP Supreme President Following the 2012 AHEPA Family Supreme Convention, I knew the Sons of Pericles would have a very successful and busy year. I am pleased to report that no time was wasted at the local or national levels to hit the ground running. On a national level, the Supreme Lodge has begun to implement our national goals. We co-hosted the annual AHEPA Family Governors Conference in Washington D.C., September 21-23. We had exceptional attendance from around the nation with more than 20 members present. Moreover, we were pleased to have Ronald Bartek, co-founder, Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) visit with us. He displayed enthusiasm for our joint National Project, which is to raise funds to help FARA find a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia. Ron’s presentation, which focused on his journey that led to the founding of FARA, was a moving one. His son is affected with the disease, and Ron provided insight about the challenges patients face when diagnosed with the disease. The accomplishments FARA has achieved in the past decade concerning clinical treatments have been remarkable. After meeting Ron, we feel confident that our efforts will help find a cure for FA through groundbreaking research. In order to be successful, however, we need continued support from all AHEPA family members by purchasing our national raffle tickets, supporting local fundraisers, and making donations to the cause. Furthermore, Supreme Lodge officers have made visitations to Districts 13, 14, and 16 to initiate new members, reactivate inactive chapters, and strengthen existing ones. We are continuously striving toward our goal of reaching 1,000 members in the Sons of Pericles. On a local level, chapters and districts have already had successful events around the nation. Most notably, in October, Boston HUB Chapter 27 hosted its third annual basketball tournament and the District 5 Lodge hosted its Halloween Party. Both of these events turned out to be a tremendous success increasing enthusiasm, membership, and raising funds for charitable causes. It is clearly evident. The Sons of Pericles From L-R: Sons of Pericles Supreme President Michael Michalopulos, Maids of Athena Grand President Angela Armstrong, FARA Co-Founder and President Ron Bartek, Maids of Athena Grand Treasurer Penelope Alefantis, and Sons of Pericles Supreme Governor Jason-D. Vergados have been active in advancing the future of Hellenism in America, and I am proud to represent this great organization. We are the rising Sons of the Order of AHEPA — “Proud to be a Son.” Sons and Maids enjoy a beautiful day at the National Mall in Washington, DC. “Greeks In LA 2013” Tournament Lowers Cost of Participation The successful “Greeks in LA 2013” basketball tournament will be held Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, January 18-21. The cost to participate this year has been lowered to make the tournament and after-hours events more affordable. The tournament will be held at the UCLA Student Activities Center on Saturday and Sunday. The Luxe Hotel on Sunset Boulevard is tournament hotel site. Room rates are $179 a night for two double beds. Gus Sverkos and Goodtime Events will be planning the after-hours events for each evening.
