You must have confidence and flair because you are competing with a woman’s time and a woman’s time cannot be squaundered. Go back to your own courts and devise your own recruiting goals.” There was also a respectful hush when National Regentelect Libby Ramirez stepped to the podium. Libby said she was especially proud of the wonderful support she received from her family, who made the trip from Texas to be with her for her installation as national regent. Four of her sisters, her four daughters and other relatives and inlaws totalled 27 members of the Ramirez clan, whose pride in her new position was palpable. “It means so much to me that so many members of my (quite large!) family shared this important event with me,” Libby said. “There are many dear and familiar faces and I’m so glad my family’s are among them.” Sadly, her husband Alfred was not one of them. Alfred died after 47 years of marriage to Libby in January 2007. “Alfred was right by me every step of the way,” Libby said. “I could not have come this far without his love and support. I am so grateful that he was able to attend the previous Biennial Convention so that he could see me voted national regent-elect. I have no doubt that he is in heaven, sharing this experience with me.” Members of the Catholic Daughter youth were also present. Mary Nobile is regent of Court GWU #2577, the Campus Court at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. A sophomore, Mary is a political science major there. This was her first convention. “What made the convention so strong for me was to be with so many Catholic women,” Mary said. “I’ve never seen so many Catholic women in one place. And everyone treated me wonderfully.” It did seem pretty special that a woman of college age would venture across the country in the middle of summer to be at the convention. “Actually,” Mary explains, “I didn’t have to travel across the country. I go to school on the East Coast but I only live a couple of hours away so it wasn’t hard to get here.” Still, she came. Her faith is very, very important to her and her campus court helps keep her grounded in it while at school. She wanted to learn more about the Catholic Daughters and thought that the convention was an opportunity to do so. Mary also liked the fun and festive aspects of the convention. One thing about the Catholic Daughters is that they have a good time and can embrace the enjoyable and joyous aspects of their faith. This campus court is able to do the same. The campus court devotes every third meeting to spirituality. Most meet- Libby Ramirez is escorted by her grandchildren. Claudia Bosch greets her daughter.
