For others, it means immediate failover to an external system when the power goes out. Few, if any, think about human error in relation to disaster recovery – an omission that is leaving many organizations unprepared. In order to be effective, disaster recovery solutions and processes must keep pace with an ever-changing threatscape. F Whereas organizations have spent years hardening the perimeter, they must now contend with a significant shift from external threats to those occurring within the enterprise. According to its recent analysis Dell MessageOne found that Technical Failure accounts for 46 percent of network downtime, making it the number one threat to business continuity. Following closely behind is Human Error at 40 percent. Natural Disaster, most commonly connected with the need for disaster recovery solutions, trails behind at 14 percent. “Human Error is one of the largest causes of significant business destruction in business organizations,” says Paul D’Arcy, director of marketing for Dell MessageOne, underscoring its importance on the burgeoning list of threats. Human Error Although Human Error and Insider Threat are categorically the same, they are often separated by whether or not any malicious intent existed. In terms of disaster recovery, the point is moot. People tend to take the optimistic view that employees are good people and that they’re honest. It’s contrary to human nature to assume that your colleagues could rob the place blind or take down the network or destroy the business.” Adds Michael Osterman, principal of Osterman Research, “We hear a lot about hurricanes and earthquakes and all the rest, but it really is much more common to have a
