Messaging News - October 2008 - (Page 6) EDITOR’S NOTE Innovation: Continuum or Earth Shattering? A piece of research for the cover story, Targeting the TechnologyWise Customer, came from The Economist’s March report The Digital Company 2013: How Technology Will Empower the Customer. The senior executives, business leaders and independent technology experts that participated in the survey felt that companies today tend to rely mainly on in-house R&D and other internal sources for their innovative ideas. In 2013 customers, empowered by technology, will represent the leading source of new product and service ideas. This got me thinking about innovation. Due to space constraints, I was not able to include a thought-provoking paper from Forrester Research: CIOs: Don’t Constrain Innovation. Written by Bobby Cameron and published in April, the paper made some interesting points, the one I like best: Don’t miss lower-impact opportunities by looking only for earth-shattering change. The concept is that innovation should be treated as part of a continuum of opportunities “ranging from business-as-usual to radical new ideas.” The paper also recommends that innovation be budgeted separately to “reserve innovation funds for ideas that your firm wouldn’t otherwise pursue.” The other nugget: Make an innovation process and let it be known throughout the company “including the mechanism for submitting ideas and viewing the portfolio” with the intent that employees, customers, suppliers and partners should participate. Also in this issue, we offer The Insider Threat: The New Era of Disaster Recovery, where we look beyond natural disasters to that other unpredictable occurrence: Human Error. In Making Collaboration Tools Pro-Knowledge Sharing, Michael Sampson shows us that unless you are part of a specific group with access to hidden workspaces, there is a good chance that you are missing out on valuable knowledge. By setting limited access to knowledge sharing, your co-workers might be producing or have completed, just what you need; only you don’t know it. Botnets Go Marching On, and on and on. This story is a look at botnets fresh from the perspectives from September MAAWG meeting attendees and MAAWG chairman Michael O’Reirdan. The news, while not pretty, is encouraging in that the industry is coming together to focus on this difficult problem. As email e-Discovery requests are now standard, understanding email forensics has become more important. Our last feature, Dissecting Email Forensics, focuses on email investigations and offers thoughts on the process of keeping and deleting email. As always, we like hearing from you.
