Data leakage and data loss is at an all time high. It could be blamed on these ever-popular USB or memory sticks, which most people now use to download and transport large amounts of sensitive data. Last September, it was reported that amongst taxi drivers in London and New York over 12,500 handheld devices such as laptops, iPods and memory sticks are forgotten at the back of taxis every six months. Bush and give up email. The president has been spotted with his new BlackBerry — a more sophisticated, encrypted variation. Aides have also reported that he uses a computer in the study next to the Oval Office. The president has had to agree to limit the number of people he will exchange email with. During a speech at the annual Alfalfa Club dinner, full of Washington insiders, it has been said that President Obama joked, “How exclusive? Everyone look at the person sitting on your left. Now look at the person sitting on your right. None of you have my email address.” Online Risks Reviewed The Internet Safety Technical Task Force recently issued a report that assessed the risks that youth face online and how technology tools might mitigate those risks. Comprised of 29 non-profit, academic, and industry members, the group worked over 10 months reviewing both academic research and technology tools. The Task Force began as an agreement between 49 state attorney generals and MySpace to look into better ways to protect children online. A key conclusion of the Task Force report is that neither age verification nor other technologies should be legally imposed on social networks and that the leading social networks are generally safe environments. The report also concludes that the biggest risks for kids involve bullying among teens, both online and off and that the kids who do get into trouble online are usually already in troubled situations offline. As of January 1, SB28 went into effect prohibiting a person using an electronic wireless communications device to write, send or read text-based messages while operating a motor vehicle. This law specifically addresses, but is not limited to, instant messages and all forms of email-based correspondence. According to the Transport Research Laboratory, the reaction time of people driving while text-messaging is 35 percent slower, while reaction times were only 12 percent slower for drunk drivers and 21 percent slower for those who smoke marijuana. 6 MESSAGING NEWS FEBRUARY 2009 http://www.cmswatch.com/Social/
