It is almost unanimous that the economic crisis started in 2007 that came to a head in 2008 will continue into 2009. This cannot help but impact all areas of business operations, including IT spending. With technology being expensive, it is more important than ever to make solid decisions to survive the bad economy, while simultaneously ensuring messaging and collaboration in the workplace supports overall business objectives. data leak prevention concerns, security will be a priority. SaaS Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) penetration will persist into the enterprise and to SMBs in particular. As stated in the December issue of Messaging News, SaaS, in this economic environment, is showing great appeal for its capital-expense cost savings, subscription-based service model and reduced IT staff time. According to IDC, the market for hosted messaging services will increase from $443 reasons to deploy virtualization, cited by roughly three in five organizations as a driver or major driver, are optimizing the IT infrastructure, to make it easier to add additional capacity to existing services and to reduce the cost of IT labor.” How fast this adoption takes place is hard to predict, as the Osterman report notes only 34 percent of those decision makers polled had a modest understanding of how virtualization could be used for email server applications. Areas being predicted to drop in priority include disaster recovery, and possibly compliance/governance. This is understandable in an environment that is requiring hard business choices to be made. When forced, organizations that are faced with increasing threat vectors, such as Web and mobile; the upswing of sophisticated social engineering tactics; along with million USD in 2007 to nearly $1.750 billion USD in 2012, representing a compound annual growth rate of 31.6 percent. Virtualization It is generally accepted that interest in virtualization will continue to grow in 2009. With many organizations considering or implementing the first stage of virtualization in the data center, it is a natural outgrowth that other areas will follow. When Osterman Research, Inc. conducted its Messaging Virtualization Market Trends, 2008-2011 research, it found reducing costs and improving disaster recovery/ business continuity were the primary reasons for deploying messaging virtualization. According to the report, “Other important no more than modestly aware of the existence of commercial or open-source virtual appliances for messaging functions.” 2009 Focus In 2009, Messaging News will continue to focus on all these issues and beyond to bring the latest thoughts from experts and offer analysis of trends to see what is hype and what is not. As messaging and collaboration continue to be increasingly important in the workplace, the economy will force IT departments to be evermore creative, and smart. Working along side business unit counterparts will be paramount to ensure the right decisions are being made, and the allocation of precious dollars are correctly spent.
