Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 12) avisionary Harrisburg presence expands with restored facilities Upgraded city building enhances the “education corridor” and provides improved facilities In the spring of 2007, Messiah College, along with Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed and officials from Harristown Development Corporation, announced the renovation of a historic building in downtown Harrisburg to house the College’s growth in the city — students living in community and the offices of the Harrisburg Institute for Community Research and Collaborative Partnerships. The Institute seeks to connect students, faculty, and community partners to the greater Harrisburg region through educational and developmental programs, service projects, and community collaborations. “It is my hope that students find Harrisburg to be a viable place to live after graduation,” says Craig Dalen, the College’s director of community life in Harrisburg, noting that the city’s revitalization depends on people moving into the downtown area. The new facility, which will be dedicated at a grand opening celebration on October 3, 2007, provides housing and classrooms for 25 students and office space for one full-time educator and the staff of the Harrisburg Institute. The College decided to lease the 10,000-square-foot building at 28 Dewberry Street from Harristown, instead of purchasing the property. This decision ensures that the facility will continue to generate revenue for the city, further demonstrating Messiah’s commitment to Harrisburg. According to Mayor Reed, the project represents a major economic development. Reed is confident that the renovation, in addition to modeling adaptive reuse of existing structures, will bring additional vitality to Harrisburg and add to the city’s growing role as a center for higher education. Reed says, “We look forward to having another exciting academic institution in the downtown to add to the critical mass forming around academia in Harrisburg.” (Pictured left to right) Jacqueline Green ’08, Anyah Reed ’09, and Jessica West ’08 are students living at the Harrisburg Institute during fall 2007. 12 http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/housing_opportunities/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/housing_opportunities/
