Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 13) education of distinction Attendance doubles at youth workers’ conference Second annual event draws participants from seven states and seventeen church denominations In its second year, the annual youth workers’ conference, Discerning the Times: Youth Ministry in the Midst of a Cultural Shift, attracted more than 400 youth workers, college students, faculty, and youth organization professionals to Messiah College on March 31, 2007. The conference, designed to empower and encourage both professional and lay youth workers, more than doubled in attendance since its inaugural year. Stephen Gallaher, assistant professor of Christian ministries at Messiah, attributed the conference’s growth to its ability to encourage youth workers to persevere despite the pressures they face. Well-known author and expert in youth ministry Duffy Robbins, associate professor of youth ministry at Eastern University, gave the keynote address. Participants attended round-table discussions on topics such as Sunday school, ministering to stressed teens, and partnering with parents. “It was a great success,” says conference coordinator Michelle Blackford, interim assistant director of alumni and parent relations, who added that the College has secured a larger venue for next year’s event, which will be held March 29, 2008. FRANCIS EANES ’09 Johnstown, Pa. MAJOR: English ACCOMPLISHMENT: Helped initiate Messiah’s on-campus garden Messiah Business Alumni Association launches networking breakfasts Alumni, parents, and friends exchange advice and encouragement at Harrisburg and Lancaster events The recently formed Messiah Business Alumni Association has launched a series of networking breakfasts for alumni, parents, and friends of the College who work in business professions. The breakfasts, which are held in Lancaster and Harrisburg alternately, provide networking opportunities, advice for leadership and success in business, and encouragement in efforts to integrate faith with work. Attendance at the first two breakfasts — 74 alumni and friends at the April 24 event in Harrisburg, and 60 persons at the June 19 event in Lancaster — indicates a high level of interest in this joint effort between alumni volunteers, business department faculty, and the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. “The marketplace is often overlooked by traditional mission-oriented organizations and churches,” says Ryan Glenn ’03, chair of the Messiah Business Alumni Association and senior consultant/accountant for McKonly & Asbury, LLP a public accounting firm in Camp Hill, Pa. ., “Messiah’s business alumni have proven very successful at developing, contributing, and/or influencing renowned and respected businesses and organizations,” says Glenn. The most recent breakfast, held on September 18 in Harrisburg, featured Andrew Samuel ’84, founder and CEO of Graystone Bank. The next event will take place in Lancaster on November 20 and will feature Peter Greer ’97, president of HOPE International. “The garden is our way of translating academia’s theories and abstractions into a working model. We experience community through the garden via our method of producing and distributing our produce. . . . In our setting, food has a face, a story, and a tangible history. Essentially, it is our way of taking a small step to subvert today’s culture- and economyinduced trend towards bigger businesses and impersonal relationships. As our planet environmentally deteriorates and globalization takes its course, a direction towards local living and oneness with the land is absolutely necessary.” “Messiah’s business alumni have proven developing, contributing, and/or influencing renowned and respected businesses and organizations.” — Ryan Glenn ’03, chair of Messiah Business Alumni Association 13 very successfulat http://www.messiah.edu/departments/english/ http://www.messiah.edu/org/garden/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/events/youth_workers_conference/schedule.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/events/youth_workers_conference/schedule.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/mba/images/mba.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/brs/graduates.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/alumni/
