Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 14) avisionaryeducation of distinction “Your future lies before you, and I hope you will take full advantage of it. . . . 98th Commencement offers time for celebration, reflection Author Philip Yancey challenges 690 graduates to live boldly Acclaimed author Philip Yancey gave the Commencement address at Messiah College’s 98th Commencement on Saturday, May 19. Still recovering from a near-fatal car accident, Yancey blended reflections on the risks and challenges of life with moments of levity. He encouraged students with words of hope: “Your future lies before live it boldly and fearlessly, in full confidence that nothing irredeemable can happen to you.” — Philip Yancey, in his Commencement address to Messiah College’s Class of 2007 Despite forecasts for rain, skies were sunny and spirits high at the 2007 Commencement ceremony, where more than 6,000 members of the College community, family, and friends gathered with graduates to celebrate this milestone event. you, and I hope you will take full advantage of it. . . . live it boldly and fearlessly, in full confidence that nothing irredeemable can happen to you.” President Kim Phipps commissioned the graduates of the Class of 2007 to meet the next events of their lives in a spirit of celebration. “Cherish the road,” she said. “Celebrate those daily moments of grace that are always there if we just allow ourselves to see them and appreciate them. Share joy with others. Convey hope to a world that often feels hopeless.” During Commencement, graduate Laura Beechy received the Alumni Merit Award for epitomizing Messiah’s mission of integrating strong character, Christian faith, and academic excellence. “Laura doesn’t just complete the assignments correctly,” says Kay Witt, chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, “she moves beyond the face value of a question or problem to probe the impact of her solution on others and the world around her.” School of the Arts forges regional and national collaborations New ventures connect musicians, thespians, and visual artists to the larger community Messiah College regularly welcomes crowds to oncampus arts events, but the School of the Arts’ presence also radiates beyond Grantham. Reaching beyond established musical, theatrical, and artistic performances and exhibitions, School of the Arts programs during the 2006–2007 academic year included the further development of the State Street Academy in Harrisburg, where Richard Roberson, dean of the School of the Arts, will conclude a four-year term as president of the board.
